HI- ITS THE KAUFMAN AND THERE ARE MORE THAN ONE KAUFMAN TEST- ONE OF THE

TESTS IS ALSO FOR SENSOR INTEGRATION DISORDER- MY SON JOSH HAS BOTH- I DONT KNOW

YOU BUT WOULD LIKE TO SHARE AN EXPERIENCE (to say the least) with anyone in

this group who will listen- my son spilled a drink in the car the other day and

he tried to get out of the car while it was moving, my husband was driving the

car and got out and put my son josh back inthe car and josh was kicking and

screaming because he wanted to run across the street to kfc to get a drink- a

bystander in a parking lot saw this kid not wanting to get in the car and

thought it might be a kidnapping, walked over and asked my husband what was

going on

and he said he had put my son in the car seat and he was leaving- the guy

grabbed him and pulled him out of the car and said youre not going anywhere and

hit him, my husband hit the guy back, at that time somone finally called the

police and when they arrived the guy said my husband hit him and my husband was

handcuffed and put in the squad car- both kids were left unattended in the car

until that time- the cops called me and i went out there- the cop said he

didnt blame the other guy really because he thought it was a kidnapping and sent

his report to polk co attorney, no charges were filed, polk co attorney says

they feel bad about what happened but wont press charges on anyone- contacted

child care protection unit who interviewed us said my husband didnt do anything

wrong. its pretty bizarre. charlotte henry

Wow! What a horrible experience. Nice to know there are people looking out for

children though. But on the other hand, I have had many experiences with my 3

yr-old not wanting to get in the car. He pulls my hair and hits me and as calm

as I am, I'm always afraid someone is going to come rescue him or call the

police on me. That's proof that it can happen... Glad all turned out ok in the

end.

I know what you are talking about. All 3 of my kids were climbing out of there

car seats when I was driving down the freeway or city streets. We had the car

doors on child protection lock. But I couldn't take them in public by myself.

They would scatter in all directions. They all had sensory integration

dysfunction. 2 of them went to therapy for 4 years. The 3rd child didn't

qualify for special education so I would have had to pay for it out of pocket.

OUCH. I couldn't afford it. Where did you get your sticker from?

Hope things go smoother now.

hi lorraine- i got my sticker from the autism society of iowa- my son doesnt

have autism but he needs to be treated similiarly and the sticker says-

warning- in case of emergency occupant may run away -not respond-resist help. I

also got a security system for the house that i pay 30 dollars a month for ,

self

installed, you pay for the monitoring system and it has a door alarm so it

will tell me if somone opens the door by saying door 1 or door2 is open, i also

have a card i can hand to people (you know, the people who make faces or rude

remarks or they stare or just give me a look because their kid never had

restricted interests like mine does, josh doesnt like to leave or get in the car

sometimes and this way i dont even have to talk to those people because i can

just show them the card. I dont know if you were following my e mail i made a

few days ago but I am the one whos son jumped out of car when my husband was

driving and a stranger in a parking lot thought it could be a kidnapping because

he saw josh kicking and screaming and not wanting to get in the car and he

pulled my husband out of the car, there was a fight and then the cops were

called, it was terrible, as soon as the cops got there they put my husband in

handcuffs and i had to come out there to get the whole thing straightened

out.charlotte henry

charlotte,

Yes, I had read your story. That was pretty upsetting to me. It could have

been us years ago. My kids were vary similiar to Josh. We were never arrested,

but we have had to call the police too many times for missing children. They

would just wonder off. They knew what they wanted and would go for it. Without

telling anyone what they were doing. They never thought we would notice or

just didn't care. I still don't know.

My 15 year old was only missing once, but my severely language delayed children

it was many times each. I have lots of experiences from my kids past that were

pretty scary when they happened.

In fact yesterday, My 12 year old who is severely language delayed gave me a

scare. When I wasn't at school to pick him up at 1:50pm, he decided to keep on

walking. My daughter who is 24 showed up 7 minutes late and couldn't find him

anywhere near the school. We live almost 2 miles from the school. There are

lots of streets and ways to walk home from this school. Thank heavens for cell

phones. My son 15 and daughter who is 14 were at home already. And when he

walked in the door they called and let us know that he was safe at home. But

for 30 minutes we were frantically looking all around the school and the

surrounding neighborhood. I had told him to stay at the school, but obviously

if the ride shows up too late he thinks he should walk home.

My 14 year daughter who is also severely language delayed has given me more

memories than I like to admit. When she was 2 1/2, I went to the mall with the

3 kids by myself. I let her out of the stroller to go to the potty. Before I

could get her back in, she ran out of site. My 4 year old ran for the elevator.

When I ran after my daughter she was gone. There was an escalater. But I

couldn't take a stroller up an escalator. I was in macy's and I couldn't find

anyone to help me find her. I had my two boys and looked all over macy's. I

asked employees for help and they said they didn't know where she could be. I

went out side of macy's found an information station. They called macy's and I

was told that she was in a secure place within macy's. I don't know why the

macy's employees couldn't tell me. It made me so mad. I found my daughter and

she was coloring and chewing gum. She was rewarded for her escape. I took my

kids home and decided that the mall was off limits. But picking up from

school was a regular nightmare. I had a hardtime getting the kids to agree on a

meeting location. My daughter especially is stubborn. She just wouldn't come.

Finally when they were 6th grade, 5th grade, and 3 grade we agreed to the front

of the school with the drive through.

I hope things go better for you now. It was very difficult going tbrough things

like this day after day. The doctors just want an easy fix, by medicating them.

My husband and I decided that we wouldn't go along with that. There had to be

another way that stimulants. Now that they are older, I realize that my kids

weren't really inpulsive, they just wanted to do things there way. They just

didn't communicate what they were doing.

I could share many other nightmares. I guess we were just lucky that we didn't

have an experience like you and your husband. I always worried that someone

would say we weren't good parents because we couldn't keep up with our children

to keep them doing the right things.

Sorry this was so long. Hope things are going better now.
