Guest guest
Hi All, After registering Alena for preschool/daycare for two and half hours a day, twice a week, after filling out all the forms (In April) and even meeting with the staff and getting their ok to take her. Today, just a few days before I was to start school and she was to go to the daycare/preschool they called and said that they couldn't take her after all because she carries an epipen. Can they do this?? I am so upset. This daycare/preschool is right in the college I was going to go to. They even had my doctor fill out a form for the epipen. This just stinks!! ~Alena's Mom
Guest guest
Hi What a huge disappointment for you all, and what a miserably inept way they have handled this. I'm so sorry. I don't know anything about pre-school in the States but I have a sinking feeling they can refuse whoever they want to. Pre-school isn't school, so isn't mandatory, I guess. There was a case recently here in England where a little boy with a peanut allergy who also carried an epipen was refused a place at nursery school. It just seems particularly "mean" in Alena's case, as presumably you will be in the same building yourself, attending college, and could run there and administer the epipen yourself, in the extremely unlikely event that she needed it. I've asked a friend of mine who is a teacher in Canada what her views are and will let you know if she says anything that might help. Best wishes, Carol A school question Hi All, After registering Alena for preschool/daycare for two and half hours a day, twice a week, after filling out all the forms (In April) and even meeting with the staff and getting their ok to take her. Guest guest
I don't think any school, private or public would let the child carry the epipen (correct me). To my knowledge, it would need to be with the school nurse or perhaps the teacher. But that shouldn't stop her from going. Is this a paid for school or is it a state run preschool. Not that it makes a big difference, but it might make a small difference. Deserves some investigation. I would ask mor questions. Guest guest
Barbara, I didn't plan on leaving the epipen with Alena but with the instructors. It is a daycare/preschool facility in the campus of the college I was going to start on Monday. I did talk to a lawyer today and he said they are completely wrong. As I had a meeting with the instructors and explained her medical history and we filled out a medical form that they filled out as to what I was telling them and all three teachers wrote the EXACT same thing " Mom instructs that should child have difficulty breathing, swelling, turn blue or purple, call 911 then call Mom in class on her cell phone " At the bottom it simply says " Mom will leave epipen at the center " I also agreed to go to the college EMS office and leave a fact sheet and doctors notes JUST IN CASE so I never asked them to give her the epipen only that its there in case needed. We live in a very small town and once the college EMS squad is dispatched so is the local one. Not to mention I will be in the next building with a cell phone on me. Well, I will see what the lawyer has to say tomorrow. I know that it would be a very sad shame if other kids were turned away and their parents unable to continue their education for the same reason. Thank you for your concern. ~Alena's Mom A school question > > > > > > Hi All, After registering Alena for preschool/daycare for two and > half hours a day, twice a week, after filling out all the forms (In > April) and even meeting with the staff and getting their ok to take > her.
