Speech Question

My daughter was almost 2 1/2 when we started with EI and we only had one 1

hour session each week. When we stared EI had about 30 words, not all of

them clear. Some of those that were counted as words were her version of words.

The words that others could understand was probably more like 5 to 10. I wish

we had pushed for more time with the speech therapist, but I didn't know any

better. I wish we had started AV therapy then too, but once again didn't know

any better. In spite of that is thriving in Kindergarten where she is

mainstreamed as the only HOH child. After we aged out of EI at 3, we began to

see a private therapist two times a week for a 1/2 hour, plus the time she spent

at school with one.

Good Luck,

Yes, Jakob has a major speech delay. He is almost three and only says four

words. So you can see my concern about only having therapy one day a week for

one hour. I know that Jakob will thrive with his cochlear implant as long as we

and a therapist continually work with him. thank you for responding.

I just want to know if we actually go to a speech therapist will it be more

than one day a week? One day a week seems so

limited.

Go with your gut and ask for more days. If once a week seems like not

enough, then it probably isn't. I'd argue that twice to three times would be

good

and would provide not only reinforcement of skills, but the opportunity to

advance more quickly as well. Is one of the concerns a delay? If so, then

additional time will be easier to get.

Christian has now mastered: mama, dada, ama, aduh, " g " and several others. He

is profoundly deaf and will get the cochlear implant in Feb/March. Just curious

as to if this is normal. I mean, I know that he won't have a lot, but is the

amount that he says normal? " G " is his newest and has only said it once or

twice.

Hi - how old is Christian and does he wear hearing aids now?

Congratulations on G!!! That is a really hard consonant for some

deaf/hh kids to learn to say because it is made in the throat and

there is not a lot of visual cue how to make it. Even once my son

could hear the G and K (which is a non-voiced G) sounds with the CI

and differentiate words like coat, boat and goat by listening alone,

he could not pronounce G or K for a very long time. While it only

took him maybe only a couple months (or less) post-implant to hear

the difference, it took him 3 years to be able to use G and K in his

speech consistently.

So the fact that he makes so many sounds already is wonderful, and

suggests he will take off with the implant!

He's 10 mos old and has hearing aids, but doesn't wear them often.
