Hi Tracey,

Don't worry, EFA's are also working wonders for autistic children as

well. Autistic children also have alot of similar symptoms as apraxic

children, low tone sensory issues, speech delay, carn aware is an

amino acid found in the brain, muscle nerve tissue, it is also

believed to be somewhat of an anti-oxidant and a neurotransmitter, so

just by what it does, it could conceivably be of a benefit. And I

would say that probably most of what they sell is for use by autistic

children, also alzheimers patients anyone with a neuro type of

deficit.

Traci,

Basically these conditions can co-exist with autism but you don't

have to be autistic to have these conditions.

We'll be trying Carn-aware as well, so I'll keep you posted.

Traci -

This is just a guess but when you read the info on the " official " carn-aware

site, the supp was initially found to help kids with autism. It's only more

recently that it is being found to help kids with apraxia, etc. Could be that

the rep simply still associates it with only autism and issues related to that.

I wrote this to a Carn-Aware rep and this is what he replied:

Aware has successfully addressed and which are related to Autism. "

This is what they wrote, this is not the diagnosis that my daughter

recieved. What is Carn Aware typically used for? Can anyone please

shed light on this for me, and maybe tell me why this rep from Carn-

Aware would say this?

Thank you

Hi Sherry and Traci!

Carn aware was originally tried by pediatric neurologist Dr.

Chez to help his patients who had " fronto-temporal lobe seizures, or

generalized epilepsy " , to help stop the seizures. When children

have severe seizures they can lose language. The reported surges in

speech from these children with severe seizures while on the carnosine

mixture was then first tested and proven positive as an open label study

with children who had " fronto-temporal lobe seizures, or generalized

epilepsy " -'then' as a double blind study with autistic patients.

Please don't let that influence you into thinking that carn aware or

carnosine was first tried for children with autism.

It's fortunate there are monies for autism research -it's

unfortunate that the majority of the other communication (or

seizure) impairments do not have the same awareness nor funding for

research. I learned through an attorney from one hospital in CA

that he who pays for research = what is known, which is fair

-but at the same time sad. As he said to me and I quote, " A couple

came in here and gave us a million dollar check for MS research -

PhDs jumped to work on MS research. The shame is that the same " MS "

research would have just has easily also helped two or three other

conditions -but they won't be researched or even mentioned when

results come in -because they don't have the power or the money that

MS does. That's just the way it is. "

So the moral of the story -look outside the box especially when you

are looking to help overcome a condition that has little awareness

nor monies. The first research for " EFAs and apraxia " may more

likely be that EFAs help autistic children find a voice.

If it

helps bring children a voice, and it's not harmful or expensive to

try -then why not try it? -no matter what the reason your child

isn't talking yet. Run the information by your child's doctor.

And the history of carn aware/carnosine

http://www.speech-express.com/alternative-therapy/carnosine.html

Will it help your child -only trying it will you know for sure. As

a group it does appear that carnosine and carn aware increase speech etc. in

various conditions just like EFAs -apraxia too-not as consistent as EFAs -but

definitely worth

looking into and exploring. As I've reported before -I've used carnaware

on an on and off schedule for only my son Tanner which seems to work

well. Unlike the EFAS -this is something I don't find to be good to

give to Tanner every day, but it's great to give it here and there.

Wish I could tell you why that is -but for now I can't.
