I will give a better update later, but for now .. we saw Dr Mosca

today and are scheduled for 2 more cases after he gets back from

England in February. It isnt anything that we did not expect, but

still very disappointing since Kai just started walking :(

Well, more later!

Hi Angel,

Thanks for the update. Hopefully this will be the last of it. Dr.

Ponseti told us that Chelsea may need more casts too when she is

about a year old. She is not walking yet, but still I can imagine how

you feel. Hopefully this plantaris will clear up after about a year

of age. Looking forward to hearing more details!

Hi Meredith!

Now that I am home safe ... lol ... I will say a bit more! What has happened

- and I knew it had - was that Kai's arch has pulled up again, although not as

bad as before, and the outside toes are turning under again. I know that you

know what I mean because Chelsea's did the same thing. The funny thing is,

everyone keeps discounting the turning under of the toes, but I know it has

something to do with it! Anyway, Dr Mosca was leaving for England shortly after

our appointment, so the first cast wont go on until Feb 11 (which is a real

bummer) and he is planning on keeping each cast on for 2 weeks.

It was kind of funny. Since Dr M is going to England for 2 weeks or so, he is

booked solid for weeks after he gets back. The scheduler says " have you ever

seen Dr SoAndSo? " and we say, no we wont allow a different doctor to see Kai,

and she kept making trys at us along this line ... then the cast tech came out

and heard her and said " You cant schedule him with anyone else unless you clear

it with Dr Mosca, and he will say no. This little guy has been from here to

Iowa and back with his foot! " LOL Needless to say, she decided she would wait

for the complex scheduler and the doctor before setting any appointments for us.

We tried the new Markell shoes on Kai and are going to give them a try after

casting (They are slowly trickling into Seattle). They seem like they may work

better because the softer leather will hold the foot more closely than the old

style. If they dont work well, then it will be time for the shoes. We

did not get those in the first place because Kai's feet will actually stay in

the other shoes, but they dont seem to hold correction.

I do hope this will be the last set of casts, but I am still prepared for more

- or at worst a lengthening proceedure on the ligament in one year. Kai seems

to have an odd foot in that it corrects very easy, but it also relapses just as

easy. On the plus side, he hasnt gone into a full relapse like before.

How is Chelsea doing? I gather from what you have said recently that the

shoes are working extremely well for you?

Hi Angel!

I don't think it will hurt Kai that he has to wait a few weeks for

the cast. It is not a fun thing to look forward too though. At

least you can plan for it a little.

Chelsea is doing well. The shoes are great because they stay on -

for 3 months I was waking up in the middle of the night putting her

feet back in, and this is way better. I think her plantaris foot

does better when it is only in the shoes 14 hours a day. Her feet

are the same size which is definitely an improvement, and she seems

to still have flexibility in both feet. She still has a tiny little

crease.

But sometimes when she stands, she stands on the outside of her left

foot rather than standing flat, and sometimes she stands on her toes

on her left foot instead of on her whole foot. She isn't really

pulling up yet, I have to put her in a standing position. So I am

not sure if she will need more casts, but it looks like a relapse.

I don't know if I would call it a relapse - because it was never

perfect.

I don't know when the best time to do another set of casts is

either. Maybe right before she starts walking so that the walking

will help prevent another relapse. She had about 11 casts and she

was in casts for about 3 months total, and she does have some

developmental delays. She started physical therapy last week and

the therapists said that she has the development of a 9 or 10 month

old. She will turn 1 this month! So I'm reluctant to do more casts

until she catches up a little more.

And I hope that she isn't one of the 5% who needs surgery after

treatment with the Ponseti method.

Hang in there!
