Guest guest
Dahlia, Wow, amazing that I've been taking 1 mg of melatonin in the midst of all my sleeplessness and wondering why I'm jolting awake at night with pounding heart. It never used to do this to me, but I guess our bodies change. Do you remember the source that said that it lowers cortisol? I'd love to read it. > > > If you take too much melatonin, you may experience the following effects: > > * Drowsiness upon arising > * Wild, not just vivid, (bad) dreams > * An excess of the thyroid hormone (T3), resulting in waking up > nervous, sweating, and with palpitations > > > > Hi , > > You can add " lowers cortisol " to the possible effects of melatonin--I > can't unfortunately find the source for that, but it was discussed on > this board about 6 months ago. > > Dahlia > >

I too thought I was helping myself and have had much better sleep since I stopped. Also maybe it's your cortisol levels which are presumably changing and normalizing that account for the change in your reaction to melatonin?? Don't know. It was a university study (maybe from Yale??) and I may have saved it; if so I'll post it, otherwise, it's hopeless, I'll never remember. One thing I do remember is that study authors advocated the use of .03 mg max--I don't even know where you'd find that low of a dose. btw, I've recently been experimenting with Passion Flower for sleep and loving it--it makes me pleasantly drowsy and peaceful and no hangover in the morning at all. I find it works if I take it about an hour before I want to go to sleep, but it doesn't help at all if I wake up in the middle of the night and take it.
