Guest guest
Amelia- Try contacting Washington Sensory Disability Services (WSDS) for info on Seattle programs. Also, I know that Children's hospital puts out an annual catalog of camps and programs for kids with hearing loss that you may want to ask about. I think they may be on their website as well. Very outgoing and confident. He is a kid who likes languages - he's actually doing well in French as well, much to our surprise. Tom has a severe/profound loss. With lots of speech therapy and hearing aids/cochlear implants who knows?! Thats one really frustrating thing about all this stuff is that there is no black and white answer. Merry Christmas to you as well. =) Tawnya
Guest guest
> If she has mod-severe hearing loss, no understandable words at 28 months, will she be able to learn to communicate orally still? Absolutely!!!!!!!! I have know several late-diagnosed kids that communicate orally very well by age 5 or 6 (the mom of one of those is a member of this list but is on vacation at the moment.) My own son was identified and aided at 13 or 14 months, but did not get truly good hearing with the CI until he was 4 years old. He had language through sign, but could understand almost no words spoken orally, except if he knew they were one of a subset he was told, like " [signed] Tell me what color am I saying, " and could speak few words as well. By the time he was 7 three years after getting his implant, his spoken language was within the normal range for his age and his speech was intelligible. We don't sign any more very much except wehn he's in the bath tub and first thing in the morning. My son was 4 and your daughter isn't even 2 1/2 yet! The future looks very bright! (Even more so if it is possible she was born hearing and had a progressive loss -- that is if she's been able to hear better before.) If you would like her to communicate orally, it will be important to find her good speech and language therapy and to learn to work with her to reinforce language learning at home. (And if you should decide you want her to sign, then you will have to learn yourself and pass on the knowledge to her. There is no effortless way, oral or sign, but either way it sure is rewarding to see a child's language grow by leaps and bounds.) She's being referred because there's a question if there's hearing loss - the diagnostic test (which is usually an ABR test) will tell you more... Guest guest
Hello everyone, Ive been lurking here for the past week.Let me tell you about my situation... I blood test said I was hyperactive so I went for another blood test and an ultrasound of my thyroid. They found a single nodule and I of course freaked even though I hear nodules are very common. I was diagnosed with Graves disease from the bloodwork and I have some eye involvement. This has all transpired in the past month so forgive me because I am more than overwhelmed. I went this past Mon and Tues for an rai uptake scan and will get the results from my Dr tomorrow. The physisist that I was talking to and was in there said my uptake was high and probably a hot nodule..but I wondered wouldnt the Graves make it high too? Im just really scared because I know I have Graves and I dont think nodules cause Graves so now Im panicking that I have cancer. My anxiety is getting bad last night and today although I felt great before that.Im on only beta blockers for now and they really seemed to help.I guess Im more nervous because my appt is tomorrow. Does anyone here know or have any experience or knowledge about when one has Graves and a nodule? Thanks so much, Stacey

Grave's disease is called Grave's disease after the physician Dr. Grave who first listed the symptoms together back in the 1800's not because it is grave.. Warning..the next step your doctor may try to do is called RAI..in which is similair to the scan you just had but at a much higher dose. This will control symptoms of hyper thyroid but it will worsen your eye symptoms.. eye symptoms tend to run there own course but will calm down when thyroid levels are kept optimal..not too high and not too low. Yahoo has a Grave's support thyroid group..I suggest you check it out as they can explain to you what to expect..Antithyroid drugs, proper monitoring etc. Kats3boys

Guest guest
You're more than welcome to be in more than one group.. there aren't any rules about that at all... Each of the groups has it's own 'flavor' I belong to quite a few myself.. it's the best way to get LOTs of input on stuff! Here we're more of a generalized group... we sometimes don't get as specific on some stuff as other groups can, that's why we've always encouraged folks to share info on other groups that cover things that we're discussing... as happened in this case.. The only thing that I don't like is folks that cruise groups just to promote their own groups or others... that's tacky.
