Viagra May Help Lung Disorder

BOSTON (Aug. 3) - Doctors are asking the manufacturer of the impotence

drug Viagra to develop a pediatric version to treat a rare but potentially

fatal lung disorder after the drug was successfully used on patients at Boston

Children's Hospital.

This week, 10 pediatricians from the United States and Europe met with

Pfizer officials in London to ask for help making a pediatric intravenous

formulation of Viagra and paying for clinical trials to determine the

drug's effectiveness, The Boston Globe reported Friday.

Children's Hospital doctors first used Viagra on an infant with heart

disease and pulmonary hypertension in 1998, looking for a way to allow the child

to breathe on her own without using nitric oxide gas. They've given Viagra

to 14 ill children since. The first patient and some of the others eventually

died, but the treatment allowed 13 of the children to stop using nitric oxide.

Doctors believe the drug may relax and expand blood vessels in the lungs

the same way it works in the penis for men suffering from impotence. Nitric

oxide is known to relax blood vessels in the lungs, but it can be hard to wean

patients off the gas.

Pfizer spokeswoman Yarin in New York said ``we're exploring and

assessing the potential role of Viagra in pulmonary hypertension,'' but

any discussion of clinical trials or a pediatric version of the drug is

premature.

In pulmonary hypertension the blood vessels tighten, severely limiting

blood flow and raising blood pressure in the lungs. A serious form of the

condition affects only a small number of children.

Dr. Atz treated the first baby given Viagra by crushing a Viagra

pill and giving it through a feeding tube.

``We were pleasantly surprised at how well it worked, but we weren't

completely shocked,'' said Atz, now director of pediatric intensive care

at the Medical University of Southern California.

Though the FDA has approved Viagra only for male impotence, federal

rules allow doctors to prescribe the drug for other conditions.

But doctors won't know if the use is safe and effective until large,

randomized clinical trials are performed, said Dr. Wessel,

director of Children's cardiac intensive care unit.

Pfizer, which had $1.3 billion in Viagra sales last year, probably

wouldn't see financial gain from a children's formulation of Viagra, analysts

said. Clinical tests would cost several million dollars.

Earlier this year, Pfizer agreed to supply Viagra to a Canadian

teenager with congenital pulmonary hypertension after his insurance company

stopped paying for the experimental treatment.

The drug opened the blood vessels in his lungs, allowing him to climb a

flight of stairs without losing his breath or getting dizzy.

OK>>>>>

so maybe it does help....but I just HAVE to ask this question....

wouldn't one of the side effects of using viagra to treat pulmonary

hypertension (in male patients, that is...) be a perpetual erection???????

well.......would it???????

Too funny...maybe it will be a female only treatment. I can imagine it would be

pretty uncomfortable for the boys.

I can just imagine having to write Viagra down on the meds form for my daughter

to go to Brownie camp!
