One bunch of Safeway hurriedly purchased last night at probably extortionate Valentines Day hiked up price yellow and white chrysanthemums here! Bless him... Guest guest
Further to my previous message not only breakfast in bed but flowers from a proper shop delivery. Me thinks he definitely is guilty and probably wants to play golf on Saturday and Sunday.............or another women? Don't think he has the energy though (for the other woman - he would miraculously heal himself from his death bed if golf was mentioned.) I have a bottle of Mumm in the fridge and a mystery Sainsburys bag that I'm not allowed to look in which he is going to turn into a wonderful meal tonight. Guest guest
I found a card waiting for me when DD and I eventually dragged ourselves out of bed. But I had my 6 week postnatal today - an internal and smear for Valentines, how pleasant! We have a bottle of Lanson Black Label in the fridge, which has been there since I was pregnant, in preparation for the joyous birth - everyone wanted a cup of tea not a glass of champers! I wonder what DD would think to champagne breastmilk?! Have fun everyone, Liz

We now have a sainsbury's bag full of food in the fridge (not a mystery to me though) which I am going to turn into a nice meal.... I can't say wonderful can I?? My dh " doesn;t do cooking " *he * thinks men who do (like ) are ina minority, but form talking to so many people I think men who don;t (like Tim( are the minority. Anyway I'm glad I'm the kind of person who can knock up a Beef Wellington without 2 weeks notice or we'd never have fancy meals!! love him anyway! Guest guest
We had Champagne on New Years Day - the day after Kieran was born and it definitely upset him so I'd be wary. Guest guest
I take it all back - 12 red carnations arrived by post, not roses but then again he knows how I feel about extortionate rose rates near valentines day. Going to cuddle up with a pooter, three bottles of Stella and 22 episodes of Angel to watch - pooter, beer and Boreanaz - not a bad compromise eh!. My idea of heaven. Ah, but Clare's will be dead before yours! I got chocolates *and* treacle toffee (presumably so I don't show him up by demonstrating that it *is* possible to lose weight) and flowers and he even got rid of the decaying vaseful and arranged the new ones :-) From me he got two cards ('cos I am indecisive - but I did leave one on each of his pooters) and that was all - and the cards were bought mail order. Been in bed all week. Not that I had any inspiration about what I would get if I was able to be up and about. Last year's chocolate massage bar from Lush has yet to be used (perhaps because the last time we tried anything like that the sheets looked as if they'd had nappyless toddlers living in them for a week...) Oh and I had a kiss from DS2 (he's got a slimy cold as well...) -- jennifer@... Vaudin

My DH cooks a bit, but has a limited repertoire and nothing posh. When he tries to improvise, we often end up with some rather strange combination of spices. My brother cooks, but fancies himself so posh that though he was here when I was in labour, I ended up opening a jar of spaghetti sauce to eat with our pasta because he just couldn't cook without proper ripe tomatoes, fresh oregano, etc. >Anyway I'm glad I'm the kind of person who can knock up a >Beef Wellington >without 2 weeks notice or we'd never have fancy meals!! >love him anyway! Guest guest
Mine can and does cook, thank goodness. Tonight he made baked salmon, mashed potatoes, carrots and broccoli, followed by macaroni pud. Not the most adventurous of chefs but heck, its better than having to make it myself! Lesley ------------------ From: thinks the same way - can't understand why a man would want to cook if they have a wife and/or there is perfectly good take out food available! Definitely - ex-husband good at all that, very original, very personal, all carefully planned... still *ex*-husband now tho' But it is nice to do *something* (preferably IMHO not involving teddy bears or nylon underwear!), even if it is 'just' a big kiss! Grae will happily tell people he can cook BUT: -he has to have a recipe book and follow it to the letter; -everything has to be sliced, chopped, diced to perfection and placed in little bowls a la TV cookery before he starts -he would never do it spontaneously -he only offers when we're having guests so they think how lucky I am to have someone who will do this -he can only do one course -he won't let me pinch even the tiniest sliver of carrot, say, (I think he's so tied up with 'It says TWO carrots in the recipe, not two minus a sliver' It takes him about 8 times longer than it does me to make a something because he can't chop veggies whilst the meat is browning for instance. I certainly don't complain when he does do it, and take the opportunity to stay out of the way for all the time it takes. And it is always delicious. Lucky those cookbooks we have are pretty good and pre-tested! -- Sue

Guest guest
But Angi, as I constantly remind my Dad, any half decent scientist knows that organic material is inhomogenous and highly variable and THAT's why you test and test and test again when cooking! Anneliese (part-time) SAHM to Baby Tim (18/9/99), member, Alton, Bordon and district branch being very silent on this Valentine's thread as a card is all I get - although he DID ask if I wanted to do anything special (he asked on Sunday knowing there was no choice!) and then said as he was feeling ill he might stay at home instead of going to badminton. He then changed his mind and said on Monday if he had the afternoon off could he go to badminton? Sadly, Tim's nap was wrongly timed, he decided that shepherd's pie was finger food, and Robin didn't get home till 2.20 so we didn't make it to Marwell Zoo until after it had closed. Well, it was a good idea in principle.... men cooking (was Valentine's Day ) >Grae will happily tell people he can cook BUT: > >-he has to have a recipe book and follow it to the letter; >-everything has to be sliced, chopped, diced to perfection and placed >in little bowls a la TV cookery before he starts >-he would never do it spontaneously >-he only offers when we're having guests so they think how lucky I am >to have someone who will do this >-he can only do one course >-he won't let me pinch even the tiniest sliver of carrot, say, (I >think he's so tied up with 'It says TWO carrots in the recipe, not two >minus a sliver' > >It takes him about 8 times longer than it does me to make a something >because he can't chop veggies whilst the meat is browning for >instance. > ROFLOL This is Tim too.... treats it like a Scientific experiment! He also has to sit down with the book, and write a list of everything he needs -and go shopping (special trip) On this trip he can't get other stuff, just " his " things. Then all the prep is as above... *but* having cooked something for the requisite time at the appropriate temp he gets in a right strop if its not done/overcooked " because the book said.... " I have long tried to explain that a) cooker temps vary and you have to use your senses (and sense) cookery is not pure science but being a techy he hasn;t got this yet!! results generally great though!:-) Angi ________________________________________________________________________
