One time was about 5 or 6 months old. He was awake in his crib with his head turned toward the wall and he was playing with one of those fisher price crib toys with spinners and mirrors and stuff. He was looking at that and not out towards the room. He was absorbed in his toy. I walked into his room and said his name 2 or 3 times. He did not turn. Then I finally touched him and he startled. >> Isn't it interesting to look back in hindsight and realize how obvious the hearing loss actually was? I can think of several things that should have tipped us off about Neal. One in particular was that at about 10 months, Neal stuck his hand inside the vaccuum while it was running. I was using the tool attachment a few feet away and Neal crawled up and stuck his hand right under the main part. It caught his hand and basically ripped the skin right off. When I took him to the doctor they said they had never seen that happen before because most kids were afraid of the vaccuum. I just thought it was another example of how Neal was not a kid who fit the mold. Of course now I realize that he wasn't afraid of it because he couldn't hear it.
