Guest guest
Hi all, am a lurker here reading posts and learning but now i have a question for you am sure someone in the group can answer. Let me give you some backround first. was diagnosed as hyper with a multinodual goiter some 6 months ago. Got to a specialist but since i have a low income and no health insurance he did blood tests and told me i needed a scan and maybe a biopsy. he refused to put me on any meds. i was unable to get the scan and symptoms increasingly got worse and worse till i was a real basket case. Ended up in the ER, Dr there put me on Propylyhiouracil 50 mg 3x daily. Have been on that now since 12/21/05. I have felt better till recently but one thing i have noticed all along and that i told the Dr about when i was there is that i'm getting pains in my throat that are definatly increasing. Yesterday i was really uncomfortable from these and have not felt very good from symptoms again. Last night i got a real shock after i went to bed, was laying on my back and my neck was hurting. As i ran my hand over the area just below the collar bone i discovered a large swollen area where i have been getting the pain from. The area is about the size of my palm. I've called the free clinic this morning trying to get in there but really i have little hope that he will be able to do much since the last time he saw me he just said...take care of that thyroid now..gave me no meds no nothing. But since this is where i must start to get back into the specialist ......here i go again. Does anyone have any idea what this swollen area is? Don't think i have seen in any posts anyone mentioning an area like this before. Thanks for all your help, this site is a great help to all of us. A few questions?? How were you diagnosed mutlinodular on your thyroid with out a scan? Do you have your bloodwork? Free T4 and Free T3? you really need those tested... how are you feeling symptom wise? While on ATD's for hyper( antithyroid medication) you need labs run every 4 weeks.. it is hard to guess what is going on with out any labs etc to go by but the thyroid does inlarge incases of being hypo or hyper so it could be you are on too low of a dose or that you have been kept on too high of a dose for too long ... Nodules normally grow slowly, the thyroid usually enlarges slowly too so if it is growing rapidly you need to have it looked at. One way to look at your thyroid is what is called the neck check.. Grab a glass of water and go to the bathroom mirror.. Take a mouthful and tilt your head back..enough so your neck is stretched but enough so you can still see in the mirror.. swallow and pay attention to the base of your neck.. below the Adam's apple area..this is your thyroid..
