Guest guest
Isn't it amazing how knowledgeable we all are to medical terms and drugs? If someone would have told me they were taking an antihistamine, I wouldn't have even known what that was! Is anyone having problems remembering/focusing on a subject? Ah, I just forgot what I was going to write!!! LOL I know that with prednisone you gain weight, but what about the others? I think that maybe the drug alone doesn't cause weight gain, just that it causes fatigue, therefore no energy to wear off those calories. Still I was wondering if anyone knew if they experienced weight gain with any of there medications? I already wrote this in my thanks to tree, but instead of having my name appear , I think I might change it to " itchy woman " .
Guest guest
I read that Doxapin can cause increased appetite and weight gain so I wonder if all antihistimines can cause this. regards, Ramona
Guest guest
Hey, Itchy Woman I know what you mean - 13 years ago if you threw all the medical terms and med names at me that we discuss here regularly, I would have given you a blank look and said " Huh? " Epi, isn't that that shaving thingy for ladies? (smirk) And I have an Auntie Alma, but no Auntie Histamine (what an odd name). Okay, I'm on a roll here...... Never met Phylaxis (don't know if I care to, either..) Predni Zone - is that anything like the Twilight Zone?? (dee dee dee dee, dee dee dee dee...) Idiopathic - is that like a psychotic idiot?? LOL - Oh I do amuse myself sometimes...... Prednisone does actually cause a change in metabolism, and it's not always reversible. Hence the weight gain, and the problems so many have in losing that weight. We had a dog (cancer patient) who was on pred the same as I was the first time round, and he gained a ton of weight, too. Couldn't leave a big dish full of food out, he'd wolf the whole thing at one sitting, and the way he went through water! So it's not just us that are affected this way. Some of the antihistamines also cause weight gain, too, so we're dealing with a double barrel here. Prednisone causes the body to age more rapidly, so anything you can think of that is normally associated with the aging process - vision problems (macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts), thinning of skin and hair, slowed healing response, osteroporosis, short term memory loss, etc etc etc - may all be seen with long term or high dosage pred use. And I'm sure the lack of energy we all experience from being so drugged all the time also has its effects. Think I'll just buy me one of those fun house mirrors, the kind that make you look thin........ Air hugs, Jackie (I think I'm having a blond moment) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Guest guest
--- - I was surprised to discover that I gained 20 lbs while on antihistamines. It slows down your metabolism and increases your appetite, a double whammy. My personal experience with Pred. is that I feel so terrific, no hives, no drowsiness, that I'm getting back into working out. Pred even eliminated my usual migraines when I get my period. It seems like a terrific drug to me, but the documented side effects and resulting complications are pushing me to get off it as soon as possible. Guest guest
Phyllis, Do you think that the wieght gain is from the antihistamines or the prednisone? I'm pretty sure that I gained weight from all the high doses of pred. Kim
Guest guest
--- I know it's from the antihistamines as I've only been on Pred recently, and have gained 20 lbs in a year. Apparently the weight gain from Pred is even worse. Weight gain on antihistamines is something most docs don't tell you about. Watch for it!
