Guest guest
Hi everyone, Only a short note as WE have both been sick with some bug that we must have gotten at the hospital. It has spread like wildfire. I had to have Chrissie hydrated at home two times and she seems now to be coming along. I am still running back and forth to the bathroom. Again, I don't know how to thank all of you for your love and concern for Chrissie and me. It surely helped when things looked pretty grim. We are trying to adapt to the mechanical diet, although until yesterday, food was not an issue. My big problem is trying to find thick-it type liquids that she likes. She does not drink any hot liquids, so it would be cold drinks type of thing. If anyone has any tricks to make these more appealing, it sure would help. I can't imagine how I will ever get two liters in to her a day. Also, I was specifically told that frozen yogurt was not an option, but understand that others are able to tolerate it. If only she could have that, she would be so happy. It is so hard trying to explain that she can't have these things that use to brighten her day. I know that when I get back on my feet, that I can be more creative and try things, but I KNOW that this group always comes through with the most helpful hints. I miss you all so much and look forward to the time when I can sit and visit with our " family " again. This note turned out to not be so short after all! May God bless everyone one of you. Love, & Chrissie
Guest guest
Hi Sorry to hear you are both now down with a bug. Something I really enjoy are fruit smoothies made in the blender. If she likes bananas they are great as a thickener in smoothies. I often use any combination of the below ingredients so mix and match and use your imagination. Some fruits like pineapple and canteloupe and other melons don't blend up smooth so these might not be appropriate. banana blueberries strawberries papaya yogurt soy milk cranberry juice orange juice If she can't drink these in liquid form then perhaps you could freeze them as popsicles. Good luck! Hugs, Pam Macklockj@... wrote: .. My big problem is trying to find thick-it type liquids that she likes.

Guest guest
Jean I'm so glad things are looking up for Chrissie. Hope you are both back on your feet soon. I'm not surprised you went down too. Try throwing a banana, frozen strawberries, canned pears and juice, canned pineapple and honey into the blender. It makes a nice thick shake which she should be able to swallow. You could always add regular yogurt to this. I always make them for as it's the closest thing he gets to milk shakes. Of course the yogurt is a no-no for him but should help Chrissie. Hang in there Sally
Guest guest
As long as the yogurt is not frozen completely solid, but the consistency of frozen custard, I would try it. You have to be careful of having lumps of fruit in it, but if you stick a bunch of the fruit yogurt in the blender - then freeze it and stir to make it smooth just before Chrissie eats it, I see nothing wrong. Charlotte eats Ice cream all the time and I stir it to make it smooth (what a mess though) ) I also cut ice cream sandwiches into bite size pieces and give her only a few at a time - leaving the others frozen until she is ready for them - cuts the mess down considerably. Anne mixes her supplement (like Ensure) with ice cream to make a better milkshake and says that is better tasting. Rose has put up some stuff about using Jello and mixing the stuff up in it also, but be careful about size of particles in the Jello also. I chop up chicken and put it in cream of mushroom soup (3/4 cup milk to can of soup) for Charlotte. We use Heinz Classic Chicken gravy on everything. She also likes hamburger chopped up and fried with chopped onions and a little shredded cheese (only enough for flavor - should stll crumble) - we use the 7% fat hamburger and fry it in a little extra light olive oil to cut saturated fat. Just a few ideas. Take care, Bill and Charlotte

Guest guest
We have a yogurt/ice cream maker by Cusinart that I don't really know how to use. But I wonder whether anyone has used something like this to come up with their own nutritious concoctions. It may be the case that you can regulate the consistency by fooling around with the timing of things. We tried making chocolate pudding frozen yogurt once and it took only 15 minutes. Hope you and Chrissie get better soon, Debbie -
Guest guest
I don't know much about the mechanical diet yet, but you might try making smoothies and puddings with tofu. I like to use the " firm " variety. Put it in the blender with fruit. If you add 1/2 a banana with 1/2 carton of tofu and some other fruit (I like canned peaches or the cherries from the bottom of a Dannon yogurt) it makes a pretty good pudding consistency. Add a little fruit juice for a smoothie consistency. You can also add cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, etc. to vary the flavor. It will thicken up a bit if you refrigerate it after blending. Tofu is made of soy, of course, so it has a lot of protein. Best wishes to you both,
