As a breastfeeding mother right now, I can say without a doubt that what

I eat affects my daughter. She had colic from day one and one week after I

started taking out Gluten (was already Casein free) her colic symptoms

disappeared. I've tried challenging her twice with gluten and her colic comes

back within days and she's up all night. We'd still be suffering with her

colic if I hadn't known about this diet.

At the DAN confernece I asked Shattock about breast milk and he

recommended weaning my 22 mo. old son. He said that breast milk also contains

casiens altho' not as many as other milks. He felt that we weren't really

CFGF as long as he is br-feeding. I'm really torn about this because it seems

like my only solid emotional connection with my ASD son and I hate to give it

up. Also, I wonder if the breastmilk may be healing to the gut in other ways?

Any ideas?

I don't agree with Shattock at all. I think the most important thing

you can do for your son is breastfeed him and I do believe it can only help

your son since it's so easily digested. Follow your own instincts on this one.

Hi Everyone!

I enjoyed the recent postings about breast milk for an autistic spectrum

child. I, too was considering feeding my son my pumped breast milk, as i am

currently nursing my little 8-month-old boy. I certainly know that Conner

loves the breast milk, because a bottle that I pumped for little

mysteriously disappeared one day after I set it down in the living room to

go to the kitchen to get a cap and nipple for the bottle! Conner downed the

WHOLE thing in two minutes flat!

But, upon investigation, I discovered that ALL mammal's milk (and that

includes us humans!) contains casein. So, sadly, I had to put this idea of

pumping for Conner to rest. And the idea of feeding two children was

overwhelming, but I would have done it without blinking an eye...that's what

we do when we love our kids so much! I sure was bummed when I found out that

breast milk had casein....big bummer.

Anyway...just my thoughts!

Sincerely,

Benac

At 22 months old, he will be getting very little benefit from breast milk as

the main immunological properties have already been delivered. I understand

the bonding thing, but I agree with that the casein in breastmilk does

more damage than good for a 22 month old. The gut healing properties come

from colostrum, which was used up in the very first few weeks of life. We

give our son colostrum from Kirkman and it works great.

I believe you should continue to breastfeed. If your not on the gf/cf diet,

then you should be. This way your child gets the best of both.

those are still humans we are talking about. Is there another species that

breastfeeds after infancy? And while we were designed to produce and use

mothers milk, we were also given teeth, flat and pointed, to be used to

consume a diet of non-liquid things. I breastfed my kids until they were 9

months old, had teeth and could walk. I figured, if you can walk and chew,

you can get your own sandwich. LOL

Hey, i am not against breastfeeding, but I think given the mothers system,

as Miriam pointed out - because you may not know your system is damaged -

and if you are not GFCF and the immunological benefits lessen with time,

then solid food may be a better option for some. Especially if you had kids

like I did, where they ate every 2 hours, but it took 90 minutes to feed

them!!!!!!
