It could be possible too that you have more than 1 autoimmune thyroid antibody going on at the sametime and that casues the swings.. Based on symptoms though and labs you do have room for an increase in your synthroid. As a general rule hashimoto's should be treated with what they call suppression therapy meaning your TSH needs to be lower than 1 in order to keep the thyroid calm.. Although your last hyper swing could of been what they call hashimotos thyroidtoxitis in which the thyroid goes for one last run and dumps all the stored hormone. A few questions?? What were your labs pre Armour? Why did you switch to Armour? What were your labs post Armour( assuming you became stable before swinging hypo)? What other meds/supplements are you on and can you post dosing? Kats3boys
Guest guest
Hi Gwen... sounds like your Hashi's decided to flare.. that's what had you zooming between hyper and hypo there. The labs, at 8 weeks, are a valid test for seeing how your body is responding to that dose. TSH 1.27 Range 0.34-5.60FT4 1.07 Range 0.58-1.64FT3 2.88 Range 2.30-3.90 Looking at your numbers, with the symptoms that you are listing..... With Hashi's, it's best to keep the TSH approaching zero, to reduce the likelihood of a Hashi's antibody flareup... So your TSH is way too high. Free T4, for most folks to feel their best is mid range, Mid range for you would be 1.11, you're slightly under that... But the real 'tell' is your Free T3. You're not converting enough T4 (storage hormone) to T3, the active hormone that your body needs to function properly.. so, symptoms of hypo, your body doesn 't have enough hormone to function properly. Increasing your dose will increase the T4, giving your body more hormone available to convert.. It would be a good idea to see what changes you can make in supplements and eating style to increase your body's conversion rate, to get the Free T3 level up... We can go into more detail, I'll just hit you with the questions for now to see where you stand. Are you taking your T4 on an empty stomach (four hours after a meal and one hour before) with plain water? Are you keeping calcium and iron supplements away from your T4 dose, four hours before or after seems to be a good ball park? Do you eat regularly, every 3 to 4 hours, never skipping meals? Do you avoid unfermented soy and High Fructose Corn Syrup? We'll start with that... and go from there... Guest guest
Hi Topper () Thanks for your response. I do take my Synthroid first thing in the morning around the same time, on the empty stomach with a 8oz glass of water. I then wait one hour before I eat some breakfast. I eat Breakfast, lunch and Dinner. I do take some supplements with lunch and that would be about 5 hours from the Synthroid. I take b-50,b-12,CoQ10, some Ester C. AT dinner time I do try and manage to take some Fish Oil. If I take some Cal/mag its in the eve before I go to bed. No soy in my diet or high fructose. I will admit that I'm eating too many cookies. Though I have really been watching myself and there is no more cookies to be had in the house. You have pointed out something very interesting about the TSH needing to be under 1. I felt my best when it was under 1 for all those years. Its a shame I dont know what my Free Levels were. I was seeing an Endo at that time and he only Ran TSH. Once in a while he would run the T4 test which looks like it was always on the higher end of the Range. I never knew about the Free tests until I became ill and researched for myself. My FT3 seems to be in the pits. I dont know what to do with that. A few years ago I did try adding Cytomel and it made me feel worse and my heart rate would increase and I got dizzy. Then I got a Rash from it. Could be from the way the pill is put together. Not sure. I do know they started me at a very low dose cutting that dose into 1/4ths. My FT3 then shot up too way over range. Same happened when I asked to try Armour. My FT3 shot up and my FT4 level dropped like a rock. We too started low on the Armour increasing very slow. I did rash up from that too. I'm sensitive to certain things. I cannot take the drug Provera either. I was covered in Hives. So that leaves me to find a way to help my body convert the Meds better. Guest guest
Hi Kats3boys You Asked A few questions?? > What were your labs pre Armour? Why did you switch to Armour? What > were your labs post Armour( assuming you became stable before > swinging hypo)? > What other meds/supplements are you on and can you post dosing? When I asked to try Armour my TSH was 1.51 up from my usual which always was under 1. It was anywhere from .35-.86. I felt good then. Here is my blood test before Armour I was taking .150 synthroid TSH 1.51 Range 0.34-5.60 T4 8.9 Range 6.1-12.2 Total T3 1.03 Range 0.87-1.78 Yep they did not run the Free's That test was run on 12/11/02 I was started on Armour I beleive at a 1/2 grain and moved up every two weeks to achieve 1 1/2 grains. I felt worse then before. My neck swelled and I was very Itchy. I was splitting the dose and takeing half in the Morning and half later in the afternoon. I had a blood draw 8 weeks later. At this time I was taking 1 1/2 grains of Armour TSH 1.91 Range 0.34-5.60 T4 6.9 Range 6.1-12.2 Total T3 1.95 Range 0.87-1.78 My pulse was up to 118 . I was urinating every 15 minutes and so tired. Itchy like I had Poison Ivy. I got the runs too. So it was decided that I go back to the Synthroid. I'm so glad I did give it a try. You Said > It could be possible too that you have more than 1 autoimmune > thyroid antibody going on at the sametime and that casues the > swings.. I'm not too familiar with the Autoimmune antibody. I know I have been tested. Here is what was tested Thyroid Peroxidase AB 269 Range <2 Thyroglobulin AB 3383 Range <2 Thyroglobulin <0.9 Range 3.5-56.0 Not sure if I was just tested for Hashi or what this all means. I see on other blood work they did test for other autoimmune diseases and it all came back negative. I believe it was an ANA. Sed rates were done also. All showing just fine. I dont take an other meds except for my Synthroid. As for supplements I take only B-50, Methyl B-12 (1000mcg), CoQ10 (100mg)which I take at lunch well away from the med. At dinner I take some fish oil. And at night if I feel I need to I take a Cal/Mag. On ocassion now that i think about it I take some Ester C (500mg). My doctor did a Spectracell test that tested your vitamin levels in your blood. So I only take what is needed per that test. I eat no Soy and take no Flax. I will admit that I have been on a cookie binge but that has come to a hault. I made them myself but that still no excuse for the Sugar. I was eating just a few a day but that was my only sugar intake. I dont drink soda pop. We drink filtered water. I just couldn't help myself LOL.
Guest guest
Hi Topper () You asked Are you taking a > multi-vitamin? If so, check to see what it's selenium content is No I'm not taking a Multivitamin. My doc did a Spectracell test which measured the levels of vitamins in your system. I guess my Selenium level came back fine. But that does not mean that maybe I should try and supplement it. I still even though we did that test feel as if I should be taking a Multiple. I have searched around for a good Food based Multiple but have not found one yet. The other issue is the Iodine in the Multiple. Is it okay to take one that has Iodine in it? Any brand suggestions to try? In your opinion do you think taking Selenium in addition to a Multiple is more effective? Thanks for pointing this one out to me. My sleeping habits are horrible. I believe my Adrenals are tired. I go in spurts. If I have been working hard then I'm really exhausted and could fall asleep by 8. But I wake up like 4 hours later so tired but can't sleep. I want to say lately I have been very vey tired but we have been Spring Cleaning. A majority of the time I get most of my energy after 6pm. I could clean the house and run a marathon. But I also lay in bed and look at the ceiling when I'm finally tired. I usually then only sleep like 6 hours. I seem to get up at the same time every morning. I have never been a lay in bed kind of person even when I'm exhausted. So no matter what I pop up out of bed. Like today. I feel like a walking zombie. I took my meds but it still feels like I missed taking them for a week. But last week I worked hard around the house and by Saturday I was just spent. We had plans with some friends and I sent my Husband by himself. I have not yet recovered. The weather does play a role in this too. We are expecting Rain all week. I had my Sed Rate done and its fine and they checked RA and that was fine too. The neck aches nice today also so I just chalk it up to my Hashi not being under control yet. Is there something I can do naturally for my Adrenal glands? I do take B-50 and B-12. Gwen > Looks like you've got all the basics covered..... Are you taking a > multi-vitamin?
