TTSG Walking club... simple rules....

No set amount of walking other than you should aim for at least one walk a week.

Bragging on personal improvements allowed

No nagging for skipped days or short walks

Distances, if shared, can be in distance or steps...

Put WC in the subject line so folks that aren't in it/following it can skip the posts to save time...

You can join the group at anytime.... so it's 'open enrollment'

When I first started walking for exercise my goal was the length of the house 10 times before I ventured outside.... so start at your comfortable place, be it 10 yards or 10 miles... I've not walked since last summer, so I'm starting with a trip down the block and back (with a hill) to see how I do. Might just be doing it today, we're supposed to be in the 50s... it's still only 20 out right now! hehehe

I'm doing steps and miles (or parts of a mile) cuz my pedometer does that and it's universal, no translating miles to kilometers! heheheh

If we get a LOT of us doing this and it ends up being a lot of posts here... we'll either move to the Cafe to share or I'll set up another group just for our walkers....

Here's a thought.. for those of us that are going the Pedometer route... what if we put them on every morning and add to our sigs the number of total steps we took the day before???

no no no.... what if we put the number of steps we took that were over or under the total of the day before... that way no one is comparing against each other....

So say my total yesterday was 20 steps more than my total the day before my number would be a +20. The challenge is to better our self not to compete against each other....

Thoughts? I'm trying to think of ways of keeping motivation up.... We'll all have days when things get flummoxed or if we have an off day and won't be walking as much... Me, some days I'm zooming around the house a good part of the day and others days I'm in front of the computer all day......

Hmmm... maybe we should make it a weekly comparison.. yeah.... try for an actual walk once a week... and post your 'average increased steps per day' over the last week....

Now... more ideas... what tickles people's fancy??

I like the idea of posting the increase. Now I walk

around a fair bit in my job but during the school

holidays I don't, so comparing day by day or week by

week would stop me getting lazy. Maybe the weekly

number of steps is the most practical.

How about using the length and an approximate distance of time as a benchmark?

For example, I took a brisk, hour-long walk yesterday, and covered about three miles. this is more or less the norm for me since we like to keep a brisk pace. Just my two little cents worth.

So.... like how much distance/steps you cover over a set period of time?

Going 1 mile at 15 minutes is an improvement over doing 1 mile in 25 minutes kind of a deal??

Might not be what you meant.. but still valid... I know when I first got back to walking I was REALLY slow... and as I walked more I was faster..... Hmmmm

I didnt' even get outside today... poop... too much stuff going on inside... had to rip apart a printer.. and it's still giving me fits.... I'm getting ready to tear into it again... sigh...

Hi Topper,

I do my treadmill. I have it set for 1/2 mile. I think

this is a great idea!!!

I let me know when meds were working and as I started

downhill again.

I walk with my service dogs + never thought to count

that, just use it to gauge how many errands I can get

done.

Treadmill counts... so do stairs or stair steppers.... I think I'll do stairs on crappy days.. and I can do laps in the house too...

Blasted printer is still being a poop.. if anyone is following that saga today... can I count how many times I've gone to the kitchen to wrestle it!!! heheheheheh

Hi Topper, I do my treadmill. I have it set for 1/2 mile. I thinkthis is a great idea!!!I let me know when meds were working and as I starteddownhill again. I walk with my service dogs + never thought to countthat, just use it to gauge how many errands I can getdone. Sending Love, Rita in PaSD's Dillon, Shaman + Miracle

Hi Topper!

Hope you win out over that darned printer, grrr!

Yes, the idea is to walk a given distance within a given amount of time.

For example, timing yourself for the first time when you go out with a given distance in mind, but not pressuring yourself. Let's say it takes you 30 minutes to walk 10 blocks; OK, great!

Then the next time you walk those 10 blocks, you already know how long it took the first time, but now let's see if you can beat that time, or aim for the same amount of time.

The goal of course is to make it fun, but not uncomfortable until you feel ready to turn it up a notch.

I personally don't like counting steps because it's not very accurate because our stride is never the same with each step we take.

For me, I have to concentrate on what my dog is doing, so counting steps takes away from our working together.

I hope this is clear. If not, let me know and I'll explain again.

Yep... I get it... and I LIKE the idea... Part of endurance and stamina and strength (which is what many of us are trying to do and the added benefit that goes along with all of that is burning excess calories) is not just distance but speed.

To set a pace the challenges a bit but doesn't condemn one to a days of recovery.. that's a good goal... your 'prize' and proof of improvement would then be the shortening of the time...

Yep... like it...

I gave up on the printer for tonight.... the only major project left is digging my pedometer out from behind the nightstand.... hehehehe

I also challenge those that are not feeling well at all(been there, understand!) to leave the house and just walk down your block, or 1/2 block, whatever you can do. My motto is "any movement is better than none".
