Hi Cliff,

Sorry you are feeling so down. I think at some point of this whole thing we all

feel down and very much alone. Have you tried the Zyrtec/Zantac combo? It is

working better than anything else I took. Steroids didn't even work for me that

well. I still have some breakouts, but not as bad as they were, so I feel like

it is definitely helping me. I honestly didn't think any kind of drug was going

to help me. I basically told my doc I wanted to try it.

Take care and I hope you are feeling better soon, Ann

Hello Ann,

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply to my e-mail Ann.

I have been feeling a bit down recently, I guess I just wish it would

go away just like it started, but I've been wishing that for 16 years

now and I can see my life going by. Its silly I know, it just gets to

me sometimes. Its just nice to know there are other people who are

coping with it.

I am taking Zyrtec now and have been for the past 2 years. Prior to

that I was on terfenadine which seemed to work really well although I

think I was beginning to develop a certain amount of tolerance to it

because my urticaria was getting worse again just when I thought I

had it under control. Anyway the best thing about the tefenadine was

I was able to take extra tablets if I knew I was going into a

situation where the risk of an outbreak was higher. I dont like to do

that with Zirtec because I dont know if its dangerous to take more

than the prescribed dose.

Anyway Ann, thank you for your kind words and I hope that your

urticaria continues to improve.

Does it affect your life and the things you do?

Thank you

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Have you tried the Zantac along with the Zyrtec? The Zyrtec alone did not work

for me, so I was SHOCKED when I added the Zantac ! It took some time, I would

say over a week, but then I noticed that my breakouts were becoming less and

less. I still have some major outbreaks, up to two a week, but the daily

nonsense is much better.

Also, I had appointments with my Allergist and Dermatologist this week and the

dose I am taking of Zyrtec is one tablet, in the morning and one tablet at

night, Zantac is 150 mg in the morning and 150 at night. They both said these

drugs

are VERY safe!! So that made me happy. Another drug that worked for me was the

doxepin, the only problem with that was, it made me VERY sleepy. I will use

that when I have the MAJOR outbreaks. Like I said, not even steroids worked for

me.

Yes, it can affect my daily life. It seems like the more physical activity I

do, the more I break out, so of course I've been living a very sedentary life

lately. The other day we went to an amusement park and from walking around all

day

and my shorts rubbing on my legs, I had huge welts. They hurt so bad that when

I got home I had to put ice packs on them. I didn't realize that the bigger the

welt, the more they hurt!! Also, just being out in public when I have hives,

people tend to look at me like i'm diseased or something. It's a horrible

feeling. People that I know truly have no clue what this is all about. I tend

to not say too much when they ask how things are, because most of them really

don't

understand or want to hear it, so I don't say much at all.

What is tefenadine? I've never heard of it and I looked it up in my drug hand

book and it not there!!

I hope you have some relief soon. You are not alone, there are many

knowledgeable and caring people on this forum that will provide you with many

ideas! This is where I learned about the ZZ combo and look what it has done for

me! My docs

had mentioned that at some point we may add the Zantac, but from this forum I

heard such wonderful things about it, so I went and told my doc I wanted to try

it! You can actually get Zantac over the counter. I had them write a

prescription because of the higher dose and I can get a 90 day supply.

Good luck ! Take care, Ann

Hi Cliff

I am also a new member. I joined the group to find out

more information about my daughter's urticaria and to

share our 'long' story. I am sorry to hear that you

are so down at the moment. I think that antihistamines

can be hit-or-miss and it is difficult to find the

right combination. I hope that you can find useful

information with this group and comfort that will ease

your suffering.

Hello Ann,

I havent tried Zantac as well as Zirtec I didnt know it existed. My

breakouts are no where near as bad as they used to be but they still

distress me in fact just the knowledge that they could come back is

enough to depress me.

When it first started about 16 years ago, I used to have terrible

attacks sometimes 3 or 4 times a day all over my face and body and

for someone who has always lacked self-confidence it was a crushing

blow.

I'm sorry I spelt the drug I used to take wrongly, it was Terfenadine

which is also marketed as Triludan and Terfinax 60mg.

Your comments about having attacks in public....my goodness thats

exactly what its like for me. I feel so uncomfortable with peolple

looking at me I just wish the ground would swallow me up. The number

of times I've had to give up and leave so that I can be on my own

with no-one to see me - it makes me cry on the inside. This is why I

have become such a loner. Do you have friends and family to help you

through Ann? Have you made new friends who understand the condition?

Thank you for writing Ann, it helps to know there are other people

who have to cope with this awful thing.

Thanks

Hi Cliff,

Zantac's generic name is ranitidine hydrochloride. It's worth a shot if it will

help keep them away!!

Yes, I have people to help me through, but I tend to try not to complain about

it. My husband has been great. He knows how bad it can get and tries to boost

my self esteem. I do not have good self-esteem to begin with and then have

these

things all over, so I know exactly what you mean by it being a blow! Like I

said, people surrounding me have been pretty good, but I tend to try not to

complain about it, I guess I feel like no one really wants to hear it, you can

tell

when people are truly interested in what you are talking about and most of the

time I feel like I'm boring them, so when they ask how i'm doing, I usually say

" fine " or " i'm under control " !

I still couldn't locate that drug in my handbook, maybe it's not released here

in the US??

Take care, Ann
