Welcome, ! I think I can answer some of your questions. I had

the duodenal switch surgery 12 weeks ago and feel wonderful.

> How bad are the side effects?

I had very little pain postop, did have some complications while in

the hospital but these were resolved. I had some nausea the first

few weeks and no energy, but these also disappeared with time.

> What about protein absorption, how often is this a problem? Is

vitamin absorption always a problem? or just with some?

You will have to take vitamins and eat (and/or use protein powder

supplements) sufficient protein

> How bad is the diarrhea and gas?

This also improves with time, and was manageable even immediately

postop for me

> Do you really have to cut way back on food intake to lose weight?

>or can you lose weight eating a *normal* amount?

You will not WANT to eat the same quantity of food as you did preop.

You will get the same " full " feeling with much less food; this

decrease in intake plus the malabsorption causes the weight loss

> How long was the recovery?

> How long before I could go back to a desk job?

I returned to my desk job for half days after 4 weeks, and fulltime

in 6 weeks

> Has anyone had this surgery done laproscopically(sp)?

> What else do I need to know to make an informed decision?

> Does anyone know of a surgeon in the Atlanta area that performers

this surgery? anyone use this person? how was he?

Yes, lots of us have had this done laproscopically! Dr Dennis

in Marietta,GA was my surgeon and he is a compassionate, skilled

surgeon, one of the top lap surgeons in the country. Do you live

near Atlanta, ? Be sure to check out the egroup list for Dr

.

I saw your post on the list - glad you found us! There are no

other DS surgeons in GA - this kind of surgeon is hard to find, so

you are lucky to live so close by Dr ! People are traveling

from Florida and other states to have surgery with Dr . I also

recommend, like TJ said, that you go to Dr 's webpage, fill out

the Questionaire, and fax it to his office, while you are waiting to

get your initial appointment. Good luck!

Most of the answers to those questions are on the WWW.Duodenalswitch.com

site in the faq area it is a good place to start . You will also get

many answers just by reading the posts. There are some docs that do the

DS Laproscopically.

As for in your area someone else would be better to answer that as I am

from the Philadelphia area of Pa.

Good luck in your search. welcome to our list.

I have looked at all those sites, but there is nothing better than

" straight from the horses mouth " information.
