I don't know why, but it never occurred to me that my son may have some kind of speech/language issue other than just normal tough to understand 2 year old stuff. I am the parent of an autistic child, so I of course have watched closely for signs of that, but at a very young age I could tell my youngest ds did not have that problem. At birth he flunked the hearing test in one ear, but on retest passed. I have always felt he had some kind of hearing issue, but I am told untill jhe can really cooperate with a full eam this is hard to diagnose. He definitely hears, but seems to have problems knowing what direction sounds are coming from. For instance he had his back turnedc to me and was facing a closed door he thought I was behind and though I called and yelled to him he did not turn to look untill his eye caught my motioning him with my arms. The distance was only about 3 feet.His speech is constant , yet we tease him we are not sure what language he is speaking as 75% of his speech is completely unintelligible. He speaks whole sentences and it definitely has meaning to him, yet even I can not understand what he is saying. He will repeat words I ask him to, but more often than not what he says back does not closely resemble the original word. I was wondering if anyone had advice for me as to whether or not this sounds like apraxia as I have not had much time to look into it yet. She did get a lot of croup as a baby but not so much as shes gotten older shes stayed pretty healthy! But then again we homeschool.......but they are part of TONS of groups so they see a lot of kids... Guest guest Posted April 27, 2010 Report Share Posted April 27, 2010 Hi, I don't know if it's true and proven or not, but when we were in his last year of going to school (5th),,,,he was sick a lot. Not physically puking or anything,,,,but stomach aches and just not feeling well. Doc said it was psychological. And that people in bad situations can honestly feel sick although they aren't. Guest guest Posted April 27, 2010 Report Share Posted April 27, 2010 Ya know, you mentioning low muscle tone in your daughter made me think of my son.He's always seemed more "tired" when doing things in school. Simply put,,,,less strength.Never made sense, though, to us, because we do a lot of hiking and he loves that. I also think that since sports never thrilled him and computers and reading did, that obviously he wasn't building up his muscles. Hmmm..........For my son, I stand by the illnesses as being psychosymatic. They went away when school did. Ahhhhh, Laughter................ My daughter was sick often from preschool on. I think it has to do with her high anxiety and having such stress makes you more vulnerable to viruses. Since she started at a smaller school and since she has also been on zoloft she has been healthier. But she doesfatigue easily.
