Dawn,

I have a profound hearing loss in both ears and if I am given a word in a

sound booth such as toothbrush, it will sound like oobus to me. If I see the

word written in front of me, then it sounds like toothbrush clearly. This is

why I have the ability to follow a song but no ability to hear conversations

on the phone unless it is with a captioned phone. It could be that your

son's right ear has more hair cell damage and the ability to discriminate

sounds

with a profound loss is much harder than with his better ear.

Does your son respond to visual cues, such as pointing when you talk with

him? How is his speech development? Forgive these questions if you've shared

this before. I get the digest and sometimes it is hard to wade through all

of the emails in that format.

Ricky's 9 month checkup is next

Tuesday so I'll have an update there too :)

I guess in this case, it's too early to tell about speech development! :)

to know-thank you so much for your personal insight-it really has helped!

From school, where he is HI and AI, he is actually in a first grade

Autistically Impaired classroom, and my husband, who is on our School Board,

says there are very few hearing impaired students in the district, but

autism is on the rise 509%; but we are fortunate to have an AI instructor

who has brought in a hearing consultant from our County HI school to help

accommodate in the classroom. The teacher has me working with group of

words with similar endings-of the same family of words-words that end with

-ad or -eat, etc. I wonder if we could do lists of words that have initial

consonant sounds, too? He has trouble especially with B, P, and V initial

consonant sounds. I will have to look into this.

is on the low end of the class, academically, but the HI consultant is

adding boots to his hearing aids this month, so his teacher's voice comes

straight to him, as opposed to everyone else's voice around him.

Thanks again for your insight.
