Re: Had another attack last night - melatonin

My endo told me that melatonin drives down cortisol, so this may

explain your panicky awakenings. If the melatonin is reducing

cortisol, you may be having an adrenalin surge...

What dose of melatonin are you taking? My endo told me to take no

more than 1.5mg, sublingually. This would avoid this problem, and

the hangover feeling you get from a " horses' dose " of 3mg.

I eventually gave up on melatonin for the cortisol reason. I

couldn't face waking up and wondering why - whether it was due to low

cortisol, or not, etc. Then I went on sleeping meds, but that's a

whole other story.

Another thought is that valerian is very stimulating for some

people. If I take it, I can not go to sleep AT ALL. The last time I

tried it, I finally took at nap at 7 a.m., then had to be up with the

kiddos at 8. The entire bottle went in the garbage.

GABA can not cross the blood-brain barrier, but can be be broken down

to glutamine quite easily. Glutamine acts as an excitatory

transmitter. I know a lot of people who don't tolerate it, including

my familly.

Melatonin can also cause insomonia if you take too much or don't need

it. Again, my family found out the hard way.

The combination you mentioned would have me wired for sound for at

least two nights.
