Guest guest
Hi Sue, Ah, yes, the old spastic bladder...yes, we PLSers are burdened with that too. I take Ditropan XL and it has done the trick. Many on the PLS and HSP lists also take it. Pain -- many PLSers do have pain and many don't (don't you just love how consistent we all are...big problem...few of us are the same but yet so similar). I'm fortunate that I rarely have pain. I do stretch and maybe that " could " help your calf muscles. Just a suggestion and I'm sure others who do experience this type of pain will make suggestions. Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much. Helen Keller (1880-1968)
Guest guest
I have recently been diagnosed with PLS (but have had the Symptom's for several years). Two questions. The information I read on the PLS internet sites say bladder control is not a side affect of PLS. But I see in a lot of the PLSGroup messages mention of bladder problems. Would say it is a side affect - or is that another issue entirely? The other question: I also read that pain is not common. I have had pain in my left (weaker side) calf for about a week. Nothing helps (aspirin or heat pads). No cause for it that I can think of, I didn't strain it or bump it. Do any of you find such pains common? Guest guest
-Sue welcome, I have had pls for 20 years and took me 15 to get diagnosed. I certainly have pain. My gait makes me have burcitis in my hip joints and the spasms I get certainly hurt, are you on any medication? Guest guest
Hi There Sue Welcome. I don't have the official diagnosis yet but am " probable ALS " going on 5 years now. I have intermittent pain usually in the small of the back - after several good days when I try to do everything. I also have a 'tired, over-used' feeling similar to having run a marathon in my affected leg. Bladder is a which came first the chicken or the egg. I will have a few bladder spasms but those didn't start until after I went on Zanaflex. My thinking is when I don't take my midday dose on time the bladder spasms. The normal bladder muscle signal may be suppress by the Zanaflex. Another things I've noticed. The eyes are " not affected " BUT on my bad days I HAVE to have my reading glasses. Some good days I don't need them at all. Finding a way every day Eva in WV > I have recently been diagnosed with PLS (but have had the Symptom's for several years). Two questions. Guest guest
Hi Sue, Welcome to the family. My neuro says my bladder problem is from the baclofen because it relaxes the bladder. I'm having pain today in the front of my thighs today and I have pt today which I hope it works out. But there again, a cold front is heading in our direction and that could be the problem. I noticed with this disease we become biological weather forcasters lol. Symptoms I have recently been diagnosed with PLS (but have had the Symptom's for several years). Two questions. Guest guest
Thanks Bart, I printed a copy of the baclofen relaxing bladder because when I increased my dose of baclofen if I even though about going, too late! I called her and she sent word it wasn't the baclofen I probably had a bladder infection to check with my G.P. She really didn't know and sure wasn't going to look it up. No problem now as I am only taking 20 mgs a day. She put me on 60. Have a good day, and they will get better, up is the only way now. Guest guest
Sue, I use Aleve, also. It seems to be what works best for me, giving me some relief from the pain but not making me feel groggy as some heavier duty pain medications can. Another thing that has been a life saver for me is Lidoderm patches. They are self-adhesive, about 4 " x 6 " thin pads that contain lidocaine (similar to novocaine at the dentist). You can wear up to 3 patches at a time. When my knees are bothering me, I cut a patch in half and stick them to the outside part of the joint, where the pain is. For my back pain, I apply a patch before bedtime and sleep with it on. The morning is a lot more comfortable then. They are prescription. The bladder issue comes and goes for me. Either I can't make it to the powder room in time, or at other times I have to sit for 5 or 10 minutes before I can void. Also, there are times when I don't seem to empty enough, because I just get back to bed and I have to go again .. " They " can say what " they " want to about these symptoms being unassociated with PLS and HSP, but there are so many who experience pain and bladder issues, it can't be coincidence. I haven't been very diligent about extending welcomes to the newcomers, but please accept my greetings now. I've had PLS since about 1985 or so. I stopped working (Registered Dietitian) in 1995. My voice is unaffected; I use a walker, but only have the strength to go short distances.
