The ONLY thing that would stop the whole thing was prednisone. Each time I'd end up in the ER for anaphylaxis, they'd give me another taper pack of prednisone. The first one worked great - cleared up completely, thought I was done with the hives, but as soon as I stopped the pred, wham! covered in hives again, and back to shocking. Next dose pack, was down to the last day/pill, they were back again. By about the fifth taper, it wasn't enough to back it off. Next thing I know, I'm in the ER multiple times a day with throat swelling/shocking. Doctors where I lived finally gave up and sent me to UCLA. The first thing they did was put me on a higher dose of pred, working the dosage up each week until the hives were under control. I finally got control at 100mg a day. Ended up staying at the 100mg for several months, every time they tried to lower the dose, the hives would come back. Eventually was able to taper very slowly, and after 2 years of being on pred, was finally able to stop it. The worsening of the hives seems to be a typical pattern when going off of prednisone. Others have mentioned experiencing the same thing. And it seems like a higher dose is needed each time to get the CU back under control. Kind of a boomerang effect. Because of this alone, I think if a person can avoid going on prednisone to begin with, they're better off. And I'm not even considering pred's nasty side effects.
