Guest guest
Hey Everyone, I have a question for everyone. You all don't have to answer/reply but I really am curious and anxious for any advice. My dietician/surgeon's office has told me repeatedly (time and time again) NOT to compare my weight loss with anyone else' weight loss. Well, with the signature lines at the bottom of everyone's post (almost everyone) and the celebrations we have over mile stones, etc., it's pretty hard NOT to compare, if you know what I mean. I had my open RNY on Sept. 5, 2002 and that puts me at exactly 53 days, " out " or almost eight weeks, post-op. So far, I've lost a total of 41 pounds. I've read (here online) about people losing 50 - 60 pounds in the same amount of time. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something else I should be doing? I've called my dietitian to just .. yak with her about my feelings but she hasn't called me back this week. I know, from a previous conversation with her that I am not a distal bypass (my surgeon does not perform distals because of mal-absorption/deficiency problems, etc.), and that I am not transected. I'm large-boned, 5' 9 1/2 " , woman who gets 3-4 days of water aerobics/or brisk walking in each week, 2 protein drinks a day with 1 1/2 scoops of protein powder (32 grams for each drink), an additional 20 - 30 grams of protein from my meals (Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice or baked chicken, cottage cheese, etc.,) take all my vits and minerals, and completely AVOID sugar and high fat/high carb foods. I also drink at least 64 ounces of water a day. My calorie intake is under 700 - 800 calories a day, including my protein drinks. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could possibly " boost " my weight loss or should I be happy with 41 pounds in a little under eight weeks...? In closing, I raked for several hours this weekend and I'm talking I raked several HUGE piles of leaves in our front and side yards and now I have what could be described as a terrible stitch in my left side, just under my left breast/bottom of rib area. Has anyone ever had this before after raking leaves, exercise, etc., ...? It's not constant but it's nagging. I'm hoping I just pulled or strained a muscle. Thanks to everyone for listening to my pity-party. I appreciate each and everyone of you all! Love, Trace in Va. Beach, VA Dr. Schechner, Norfolk and Va. Guest guest
Hi Trace I had my op 6-7 days before you did... But to be short and to the point.... We are all different.. Some people can put on weight after just having a mouthful of anything where people can eat and eat and not put on an ounce.. Same goes for those who lose weight.. Some can lose weight at phenomenal rates ( have heard of one guy losing as much as 14lbs in a week and he only dieted) and some can really struggle with losing their weight.. I am losing weight more or less the same rate as you are.. I have lost 21kgs ( 46.2 lbs approx) since my op .. My train of thought is that as long as the weight is going DOWN and you are doing what you have been told to do.. it shouldn't matter.. I am not counting the calories because I am sure that the food I am eating does'nt even come close to what I should be having.. As for your stitch ( not sure if your term and my term are the same )?.. I used to have them when I was younger, all it took was for me to stop what I was doing and breath easy.. If you think you might have done some damage in the area where you were operated, I'd do what I was told by some one here... Go see the doctor or surgeon.. Guest guest
Trace...let me give you the " otherside " of the picture. People have jokingly..or maybe seriously...lol I am not sure..anyway people have told me they think I hold the record for weightloss. I have lost close to 200 lbs...in a little under 8 months. I was a size 32 and am now in a 16..was in 5-6X and am now in a regular XL and some larges. I have lost HALF of me in 8 months. It is mind boggling and emotional. My hormones are crashing constantly..that is a LOT of estrogen to be released from fat in 8 months. I fall ALL the time.. because my equalibrium has not caught up with my new body. I am covered in bruises because I lost my fat pad so quickly. I am FREEZING to the core of my bones because of losing so fast. Also, I cannot figure out what people are seeing when they look at me. I went from homebound to superactive athletic in 8 months..but although I have the energy, I have little muscle from the years of being 400 lbs. SOoooo when I do what I want too..I pay for it the next day. It is a constant struggle between mind and body and emotions and reality. past and present and future. All I can say is it is mind boggling and way too much to swallow at once. I also have to deal with people and their opinions on the matter...well we all do, but people who I saw at Christmas no longer recognize me. They ALL say..OMG you are not gonna be able to stop losing! ETC. I also have skin galore! I just want you to know that it is not all glorious to be the big loser! Taking it slowly is MUCH healthier!
Guest guest
Trace, congratulations on your weight loss, you are on the loosing side and on the road to a happier, healthier you. All I can do is repeat what everyone else has said, don't compare your weight loss with anyone else. We are each individuals loosing weight at our own pace. We aren't the same height, we don't eat the same, drink the same, exercise the same, take in the same amount of proteins, have the same amount to lose. You might try drinking one or two more protein shakes a day, just my opinion. I am 6 weeks out today so I'm just starting to eat normal food. I started at 380 pounds but I'm only 5'1 " tall -- I have a lot more to loose than you. I drink 5-6 protein shakes a day and only eat a very small amount of food. I have physical problems which make it very painful to exercise so I have to compensate by eating less. Just remember we are all different. You are doing great, keep up the good work. We love hearing from you and all the encouragement you give to each one of us. Thank you. Guest guest
Trace, hon - You are doing fine. Some of us just don't lose as fast as others. It took me 3 months to lose 50 pounds, and yes, I get envious of the others who lose that much in a month. You are doing everything possible to lose at the best rate for you. Believe that. Feel it. One advantage to it coming off slower may be that you'll have less loose skin when it is all said and done. That's what I keep telling myself at least. I'm sorry that you pulled something doing all that raking. That's a lot of repeated motions of the same muscles over and over and over. Apply some heat and rest and hopefully it will get better. Sounds like you were down in the dumps yesterday. Hope your spirits bounce back today. Take care. Jeanne in WI Age 39 Open RNY 05/21/2002 314/ 245/150-175 5' 8 " djgraves@...
