Me and all 4 kids are off to the airport on Sunday morning to fly

across the country to B.C.. We have an appointment for Owen with Dr.

Pirani on Monday morning.

It took a lot of convincing but my husband has finally relented.

Actually, he's not fully convinced that this is the right decision

but he realized that I was going to do it anyway and there was no

point in arguing.

He's concerned about the cost (of the trip, let alone the treatment)

and whether or not this treatment will work (in other words, will it

end up being a waste of money that we didn't have in the first

place). I told him that if it turns out that it doesn't work, at

least I'll be able to sleep better knowing that we did the best that

we could.

My only concern is that I haven't had a chance to speak to Owen's

doctor here so he knows nothing of what's going on. Owen was

supposed to be having his 3 month follow-up appointment on

Wednesday. I tried to call his office earlier in the week to discuss

my concerns but the whole department is shut down for summer hours

and they won't be back until Monday. Because I have to take all of

the kids with me and the two oldest will be starting back to school

the first week of September (for which we'll have to be back) I

couldn't put this off. Otherwise, I would miss the window of

opportunity to get Owen treated by a Ponseti method specialist. I

just hope that he (our local doctor) doesn't feel slighted by my

decision to seek alternate treatment....especially since I'll most

likely be seeing him for follow-up care. I'll have to phone on

Monday from the west coast but my stomach is in a knot just thinking

about what to say.

Anyway, I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Congrats on making the arrangements to get Owen to Dr. Pirani! It won't be a

waste of money and you'll be so glad you did this. Don't even worry about

your local doctor feeling slighted. You must stress you feel this is the

best for Owen and leave it at that. I strayed away from my local doctor's

recomendation after he refered me to an orthopedic surgeon who wanted to do

surgery to correct my son's foot. My local doc has 6 children, so I said to

him if if it was one of your children wouldn't you get a second opinion and

seek a non-surgical method out before you let someone due a major surgery on

them. With that he went silent and gave me the referral to a Ponseti

practicing doctor. That doctor casted our son, but when it came to the DBB

he altered Ponseti's method and we weren't comfortable with that. So we

sought out a Ponseti Certified doc 9 hours from here and have been with him

ever since. You will finally be able to rest when your son is in the " right "

hands. The Ponseti Method is taking off thanks to the internet. I've been in

touch with the first orthopedic surgeon who wanted to do surgery and she has

switched over to the Ponseti Method in the last 12 months:)

Good luck!

Daiga,

I wouldn't worry about your other doctor. I felt the same way when

we switched doctors, so I made my husband call because he knew the

1st doctor we went to. He called said he needed to cancel the

appointment, they said ok. And that was it. No follow up, nothing.

Besides any doctor worth his salt shouldn't mind you going to get a

second opinion, which is essentially what you are doing. You have

enough to worry about traveling with four kids let alone the doctor.

Daiga,

Good luck with your trip and with Owen's treatment. There has already been

good advice given on not worrying about what the other doctor says. I liked

the one from about telling him that he would also want a

non-surgical alternative opinion. On Monday you will probably only get

through to a secretary anyway (?).

So it's a big trip to do with 4 kids, but very worthwhile. Best of luck,
