laura,

houston sucks. Conroe sucks. I hear Kingwood is better for services than

most. I live in the Woodlands which is CISD. HOwever, one of the best schools

in nation is right in houston, it's a private school with a price tag of about

13k a year...and would be my recommendation.

I am fairly happy with the Katy school district. There are a number of

Houston area schools for children with autism. The Westview School, The

programs that are ABA based such as Shape of Behavior

I forgot about Katy.....I've heard they are a good district too.....also, I

didn't mention Spring or Tomball or Klein....not sure about those.

best thing would be to plug into houston autismn support group and ask

parents probably.

I don't know about special education, but I do know a little about

the Houston area.

The one sure thing I also know is to stay away from the Houston

Independent School District.

Do you know what part of Houston you will be moving to. Houston is

very, very, very big. If I know what area, I can at least find out

what schools are good.

My brother and sister-in-law lived in Houston for 20 years. I went

to college about 1 1/2 hours away (Texas A & M). I knew/know lots of

people in the Houston area.

Let me know which area, and I'll ask some questions.

According to my partner at work's wife, the best special education school

districts are Pasadena(yeech), Clear Creek/Clear Brook & Alvin (south of

houston). Agreed- Hisd is very proud of their cracks & how many fall through

them each year.

Whatever you do, please try to keep her out of HISD. They take our special

needs kids and throw them down a rat-hole because they don't want to spend

the money on any services.

Try katy High School....they have a program for Autisic kids.

I don't know about high school but the Katy ISD offers a program

especially for children with Autism/PPD-NOS. My friend's son is 6 with

fairly low-functioning autism and minimal to non-existent language

skills and loves Katy so you might want to contact KatyISD to get info

regarding services/programs for high school aged kiddos. Each and every

school is different so make sure that you are informed about the

specific high school your daughter will be attending, not just its

district. We are part of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and have heard the worst

about that district. However, because we live so far off the beaten

track, the school in our master planned community had only 6 children

in its PPCD class, two of them my twins. Everybody at our school, from

the principal to teacher, aides, and therapists have been absolutely

wonderful! Now, the district representative...that's another story!

We've also had good luck with the Cy-Fair district, although it does vary from

school to school, depending on the principal. I admit our school seemed to

offer more when the former principal was there, as compared to now, but the

district overall does have a lot of good resources...it's just that some schools

will do what it takes get what your child needs and some will give the old

'budget' excuse without really going to bat for you with the district. I'm

just having to fight some more now for what my son needs, whereas before the

former principal seemed to do the budget-excuse fighting for me. JMO.
