Guest guest
I find using the sling with the brace somewhat difficult. At first her legs would turn purple (I carry her front pack style, but in the sling) so I refrained from putting her in even though the Dr. told me it was ok. Of course I don't know if this happened when she was in a cast but I assume it did. Now when I put her in the sling her legs don't turn purple but it's kind of awkward sometimes. Her legs don't really spread wide enough for comfort when being carried on my hip in the sling but it does work well enough if you adjust it properly and are willing to work around the DBB on your body (get pipe insulation and pad the bar). I do use it though when there's no other option (I have a sling in both cars and one at home - love the sling!). I say just walk in front of a mirror while he'sin the sling and check his legs. I didn't think they should turn purple lol. As long as you aren't putting baby in the cradle hold, the sling may be one of the best options IMO. I wouldn't want to spend a bunch of money on a carrier/front pack to find out that carrying on the front in the sling worked just as well. Does your sling have rails? Sometimes I notice her butt coming out of the bottom rail and have to put her back in. Again, awkward because of the DBB and how it pulls her legs down. I wonder if a sling without padded rails might work better. Something like the Maya Wrap perhaps? HTH Kori At 09:21 PM 8/29/2003 +0000, you wrote: >My son has bi lateral clubfeet. Guest guest
, I loved my Maya wrap sling when was in thigh-high casts but the shoes & bar were another story. I wasn't able to make the sling work with the brace. We found that the Baby Bjorn not only worked well but was truly a life-saver. It took us a couple of times to get the hang of it but soon I was using it for almost every outing. We also used a backpack from time to time. Just be sure that the carrier has some sort of capability of opening in the crotch area so the shoes can fit through. I was also fairly careful to check her feet/legs in the baby bjorn during long holdings (full-day outings) because of the extra weight of the brace. By the way, don't throw any slings away. You'll be using them again after your son starts to go down in brace hours. In all honesty, if it weren't for the bjorn I think I would have ended up a lot less happy with this brace. Even though the shoes were bulky at times, I never felt hindered in the slightest when carrying in the Bjorn. It really helped me transition (and her) to the new shoes from the casts (I think she was comforted by the constant mommy contact the carrier allowed for). By the way, I used the Bjorn until my daughter was 14 months and still use the sling (she's 26 months and 26 lbs). Have fun touching those sweet feet and toes in the coming days. I grew to relish bath time as much as my daughter did! Amy P.S. If your son is an infant, be aware that some carseats may need a little tweeking to accomodate the brace because of the width. Bring some extra receiving blankets or burp rags along with you to your appointment. They came in handy under the legs and behind the back (although, I'm not sure the behind the back ones were " legal " ). Guest guest
I dont (or rather Kai doesnt) have the circulation issue with his legs hanging down, so I bought a front pack, forward or rear facing by Snugli. It has a single shoulder strap, which can be a pain in the BACK if you plan on packing the baby around for a long time, but for the most part it is great. You dont have to remove the DBB because the sides open completely so that you slip it thru the legs then hook it up. This link will take you to one that is identical to what we have except it has two shoulder straps. Guest guest
I agree with Angel, the snugli works well with the DBB. Unfortunately does NOT like snugli's or slings (had them both). I tried them over and over again, adn I double checked to be sure he wasn't hurting anywhere. He just didn't like them. Now he's too big of a boy to use the Snugli anyway. But the snugli did work, as long as your baby likes it. > >My son has bi lateral clubfeet. He has thigh high casts and soon will > >be wearing a brace, the brace is a boots and bar brace. Guest guest
Chelsea's legs turned purple too when I held her in that position - just when I held her in that position. I just used the sling until she was out of the casts, and then it was too awkward with the dbb. Now I use the baby bjorn style front carrier. She is very comfortable in it and it is easy to put on. I used a Maya wrap and a rebozo and I also wore him on my back in a didymos. The only problem I had was that the shoe that was at a 30 degree position did poke into my thigh more than the other shoe did. I carried him front-to front and on my hip mostly. You have to be even more careful to draw their knees up as far as they will go than you would with a baby not wearing a brace to make sure they aren't hanging all their weight on their bum with the shoes and bar dragging down. Drawing the knees up transfers their weight to their thighs as well as bottom and won't cut the circulation the way " legs hanging straight down " can. The baby's heels will also sort of " kick back because of the bar resting against your side/front. You will not be able to bend down, again because of the bar, so squat if you have to pick things up (Or if you're like me and barefoot around the house a lot, you can always pick them up with your toes . ) Other than that, I didn't find slinging my cf baby much different from slinging his older brother when he was a baby.
