Guest guest
Welcome Gaylagreat.. you just joined us today.... Have they given you a diagnosis as to what is wrong with your gland that they want to nuke it? Have they given you any medications so far to control it? What symptoms are you experiencing?? I had my gland nuked about 15 years ago... At the time it was my only choice, if I'd been diagnosed and properly treated the first time I went in I could have been treated with medications instead of now dealing with the side affects of the RAI... If you'd like.. tell us more about what you're dealing with and we'll have a better idea of what things to suggest... Guest guest
Grave's isn't fun.. I know that... The best route is to try the blocks first, as you are... and give them time to do the job... It's a judgement call... Depends on how aggressive the antibodies are, how over productive the gland is and how high your hormone levels get.. How your heart is doing... If the blockers work for you it's POSSIBLE that you can slow the gland enough to be okay... not perfect.. but okay. There are cases of folks going into remission after treatment in the two year range... but you can't count on that... Just letting you know that it happens for some. For some removing part of the gland will do the trick.. then possibly blockers to get it where it needs to be... The thing with RAI and Grave's is that even though it stands a good chance of stopping you from being hyper the antibodies are still there and there is a chance that they can cause other problems. I'm not explaining it really well.. in part cuz I've turned into someone that very much dislikes RAI and it's possible side affects. There is another Yahoo group that specializes in Grave's, have you checked there? They can get into specifics there concerning Grave's that we don't have as much background in... I'm not saying to leave us... just that they may be able to help with specifics..... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gravessupport/ How are you feeling so far? What did your last labs show as far as hormone levels? I'm specifically wondering about the Free T3 and the Free T4... There are food that work against thyroid hormones.. the safest all around are the vegies in the cabbage family... cabbage, broccoli, kohlrabi, brussels sprouts... the have a chemical in them that messes with thyroid hormone especially when eaten raw... that won't be a cure all... but will help to a point.. I started scarfing the stuff down when I was in storm, somehow my body naturally knew and started to crave them.. I used to do mounds of broccoli and brussel sprouts and sliced kohlrabi really thin and ate it as a snack, like potato chips. How is your appetite and weight doing? Any troubles there at all? I hope you don't mind asking, your screen name doesn't give any clues... are you a guy or a gal? I know this is a tough one for some folks, but your age? I'm 48, just to be fair... I can't ask if I won't tell....
