Hi all,

Yesterday we received a letter from the county Intermediate Unit, which provides

Jonah's therapy. This letter asked us to sign a form giving them permission to

bill

Medical Assistance (MA) for the services he receives. We can also choose to

deny

them that request.

Our quandry: because the IU does not provide Jonah with enough speech therapy,

we

are going to have to get an outside therapist. We were planning on using a

combination of our main health insurance and MA to pay for that speech therapy

(they only pay 24 visits per year). We are also hoping to get insurance to pay

for PT-

hippotherapy (later in the spring). So we're concerned that if the IU bills

Med.

Assistance, we will not be able to get reimbursed.

Has anyone had to deal with this? Is it typical for the IU to bill medical

assistance? Is

there any issue with allowing them to do that? Do we risk any loss of services

by

denying them?

If anyone has any experience with/knowledge about this I'd really appreciate

your

thoughts!!!

thanks,

Spencer

, first off, are you in Pennsylvania????????? Why does this story sound

so familiar?

I do have MA for Jordan and because the IU pulled the same stunt on us, I

declined their request to bill MA for his services. We had to go to mediation,

and I was prepared to take this all the way to due process, had we not been

successful in getting what he needed.

Pennsylvania is famous for this stuff.....they give BARE MINIMUM services,

unless you fight them tooth and nail, then bill MA for services that your child

is not getting. My child is in a typical preschool, and was getting a 15 minute

speech and OT consult.....that was it. No way I was going to give them carte

blance to bill MA, most likely for hours of services he was not receiving.

I think your decision is the right one. If I can help you , please don't

hesitate to email me privately.

No kidding! I swear, PA should be paved in red tape! This is why I'm planning

on taking over for the therapists.

Fight them, , and get what your child needs. We got the preschool

paid for, and two hours of speech and OT.....PRIVATE, from the provider of

our choice. Took time and a lot of preparation, but we were successful.

Pennsylvania would rather spend money on football teams, and expensive

decorative fountains (a whopping $15,000 worth of those fountains put in our

$77 million dollar high school) rather than spend it on services for

children who need them. My opinions on this are way too strong to be posted

to this list. Our school district is disgraceful, but Pennsylvania in

general is a horror story.

I am not sure about land, but in North Dakota it has to be preapproved. We had to pay out of pocket because it takes eight or more weeks for ND's medical assistance to preapprove.
