I found that Hope did that a lot as well. She started getting better at saying

what she meant, but when she first started getting words out she would go

through all the ones she knew how to say before she'd attempt to fight with a

new one. Most times what she said didnt fit the situation but that was because

she just didnt have the word for the situation.

Now she's better at saying she means and she's more willing to attempt a new

word on her own or with very little prompting. I think a lot of that improvment

is because of her preschool class she's in where they do a lot of encouragement

and it's speech intensive. One of the girls in her class started out like Hope

was last year, almost completely non-verbal, and she's Hope's main cheerleader

telling her she can do it. Her TSS is wonderful also telling her how smart she

is and getting her to try to say something on her own.

Now we're up to muti-word phrases and small sentences and the pauses in between

her words is getting shorter. There is almost no pause now where as before she

would have 5-20 seconds in between words while she tried to think and get it out

right. Her voice is still monotone when she talks, but I'm told for a lot of

autistic kids that's common and will get better.

Hi all,

I wanted to ask if anyone else has gone through this with their

child(ren) that after just recently started talking if they made

sense when answering. She has been only talking for the past 6 to 7

months and started out with using more one word requests then using

two words together and currently going from one word request up to

using some three word sentances. My dilemma is this, she seems

confused alot and may answer with words that dont even relate to the

question or situation, for example; when she is in trouble she will

refer to herself as " baby " (I think she heard this from previous SLP

A LOT) when I tell her she is not a baby she says " Benny game " (this

is a bull in the Dora the Explorer cartoon and she has a game that

has all the characters in it). Anyway, she will say that, then I

find that when she really doesnt know what she wants and I try to

help her figure out what she is requesting, even if I know Im right

because I just know my daughter, she says " no " until I'm completely

frustrated and then so is she. My question to you all is this, is

this a common trait with apraxic children or is there something more

that I should be considering as the reason for this confusion.

has been diagnosed with Apraxia (oral/verbal) and carries with the

Apraxia- (Aphasia,dysphagia,dysarthria,SPD and an auditory

dysfunction). Am I worrying for nothing this soon after just

starting to talk and what should I do to help her answer correctly or

with minimal confussion. I know this is alot of questions but it

seems that lately I have been on this road again of questions that I

have when I thought I had all of my answers, sorry if that did not

make any sense. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving.

I think it's one of those traists that overlaps autism and apraxia. Hope is

just one of those extra special kids who is both apraxic and autistic. I figure

if one of those classifies a child as special needs, both makes them extra

special. At least she is to us. :-)
