Here is a link that takes you to quotes from the experts about the need for

one-on-one therapy.

Let us know how it all turns out!

There is a great grouplist for Floridians (in case you are in Florida)

Hi, My name is Phyllis and I have a son, Nicolas, that is 3yrs 10mths and

has

been dx w/Apraxia. I had him evaluated at the Uof Miami a couple of months

ago for autism and am supposed to get the results next week. After

reading the

various messages, I have learned a lot and have ordered the book The Late

Talker I think it is. My questions are do any of your children have

problems with

licking lets say an ice cream or lollipop. My son can't get the concept

nor

can he stick out his tongue the same way??? This is baffling. He is in an

ESE

classroom for autism and receives speed 2X a week for 30 minute sessions

with

three other children. Currently, he has about 6-8 words that I

nderstand --

possibly 3 intelligible words to others. I am hoping once I get the final

results to receive 1-1 speech therapy for him. Any advice or comments

will be

greatly appreciated.

Thank you and yes, we live in Miami-Dade County(FL) and trying to get

services from the school has been difficult. My son was dx with verbal and oral

speech apraxia and PDD with all the sensory issues that go along with this. He

will be 4 in Feb and I am hoping to get the school system to give him more in

intense speech therapy. I am getting ready to change my insurance to Blue

Cross hoping to receive better services. The Dan Marino Center for Autism is

really close to me, so beginning 2005 I plan to take him there for therapies.

The only problem is if the insurance covers limited visits, the therapies he

needs are $160 an hour at the DM Center. The speech and occupational therapist

are recommending 3-4 OT and 4 ST a week. This will be way too expensive for

me as a single mom. We don't qualify for public assistance and was turned

down for the medicaid waiver until he is 4 or 5 and only then will he be put on

a waiting 3-5 year waiting list. But most importantly we have hope and

prayers that things will turn out. I put him on the ProEFA last week. So lets

see

how that goes. I have found so much info on this website.

I am wondering if anyone has the problem with teeth grinding. During the day

he grinds constantly, none at night??? I am open to any suggestions. Thanks

again to this group...

Have you checked into ish Rites? Here in Pinellas County, we

are able to use the All Children's Speech services on a sliding scale

for services. We did not qualify, but I know others that go for a

session that would normally be 30 minutes of therapy at $84.00 for a

fee of $15.00 & up. There is information on their web site or let me

know & I can get you more info. Might be worth looking into.

Hi Tammy, I haven't looked into the ish Rites yet. I am in the process

of changing my insurance and knew I would probably have to exhaust that

avenue before any other agency would assist. My new policy starts in Jan. we

have

75 visits combined ot & st and we all know how fast that goes. Any info will

help and I am definitely going to look into all areas, private, public,

school, etc I know I just have to be persistent . Thx, Phyllis
