We are in our third year of driving 50 miles each way (that's about an hour

drive) to take Neal to CCHAT Center San Diego, which is a sister school to

Weingarten. It has totally been worth it. The longer you do it, the less

of a big deal it seems. LOL. I keep saying Kindergarten will be nothing to

Neal next year since it will be a shorter day, plus right here in our own

city. I've been lucky that my mom switches off with me taking him there, so

neither of us has to do it every day. Neal does though. I do feel bad for him

sometimes, but it's what he's become used to and he doesn't complain about the

drive at all. Jen from Weingarten came down to CCHAT to work during

the summer program this year and Neal loved her. If you see her, tell her Neal

from CCHAT says hi!

High expectations are SO important. It's worth it to drive to someone who

Tawnya,

When we were at JWPOSD, the fee they charged students' school

districts was actually less than some public programs in Santa Clara

County. So even though it is private, don't assume it is more

expensive than public out of district placements. In 2000-2001,

Santa Clara was charging other districts $24000 while JWPOSD was

only $18000. Keep this in mind -- the tuition is very competitive!

The actual cost for educating each child is much more, but made up

by their fundraising and I believe, endowment.

They sure don't mess around at JWPOSD -- their staff is awesome and

they have an army of speech therapists. Each child gets 45 min

individual therapy daily. It's a great school!

Early Intervention picked up the tab until Hadley was 3 (insurance paid

$3200 a year, the EI office covered the rest). We were originally

denied services through our school system, but challenged their decision

and ultimately received what we wanted (continued weekly AVT sessions

and 4 classroom visits each year). Our rough estimate is that the

annual cost is about $9000. We chose not to ask for travel

reimbursement.

Does your private insurance take care of the speech therapy for all of you?

Tish

Yes, my insurance pays for her medical speech therapy and her medical AVT. The

school she is going to is not set up for third party billing but if they would

get this then her insurance would cover her visits there also. The school is

looking into it but it is a long process and they are not sure this is the route

they want to take for reimbursement at this time.
