No - hereditary angioedema? I don't know what that is. What is the test?

Never tried the Zantac with the Zyrtec -- Just Zyrtec with Prednazone (I really hate to put her on Prednazone, even for a short stint.) What is the benefit of the Z/Z combo?

We're seeing the allergist today & I am going armed with pictures and questions.... is worried about the bloodwork, but she's a trooper when it comes time to actually having it done. I'm quite sure of only one thing - Miss will tell him that he's not a very smart doctor if he doesn't have the "right" answers!

Irene, Hereditary angioedema is when swelling runs in the family. It is from what I understand of it one of the leading causes of chronic urticaria in kids. From what I understand it is fairly simple to test. (Blood test) The zyrtec/zantac combination is basically combining two different types of antihistimines. Zyrtec blocks the H1 kind and Zantac blocks the H2. Alena has had a lot of success with it and I believe others in the group as well. s body produces different types of histimine therefore she may find some relief with blocking both kinds. Definately something I would bring up to the allergist. Also in regards to the Prednisone, as I have been very verbal about I hate that stuff however if has to take it please please add calcium to her regimen. I know that tablets are yucky and chalky and gross however there is a new product on the market that is WONDERFUL called viactiv they are in different flavors like caramel or chocolate or orange. They taste just like a yummy piece of caramel. I have seen them everywhere but I buy mine at Walmart. Please tell that she should be brave (poor Alena has had so many blood tests she just sticks her arm out and says "my turn") and tell to give that doctor what for!!!!!!!! You both will be in our thoughts and prayers today. ~Alena's Mom

Irene: If you think that should be tested for the C1 inhibitor and you haven't received this information prior to your appointment, try calling back to the doctor's office and ask if they will include this in the bloodwork that has been done on .

I didn't realize until recently that labs were able to do this I think up to about 24 hours after the blood has been drawn.

Dear -

I've been reading this weekend's communications for the group & want to say thanks for the "heads up" on calcium & use of prednazone. Neither doctor who prescribed this for has mentioned this -- and I thought that I knew a bit about Prednazone because my mother was on it for the seven months of her life -- I have to pick up Pred tonight at the local pharmacy, and I'll be picking up the calcium right along with it --

The allergist is rerunning the bloodwork that the pediatrician took -- and we're midway through 48 hours of urine collection -- I've never seen containers that big & I hate the thought that hydrochoric acid - even in a container is in my refridgerator! Monday morning we are headed for the vampire's lab at 7:00 a.m. -- tried to be really good at the doctor's office, but the more he asked, the more upset she became until she took on her "faucet face" persona -- and she just couldn't help herself -- she told him that she hoped that he would be smart, but he wasn't (he said "I don't know" one too many times) and said - "Do you know any smarter doctors?"

He's investigating possibilities -- and he didn't dismiss my thought that this could be hormonally related -- so we're doing the journal thing to keep a calendar -- I'm hoping for answers or at least enough relief so that I won't come away from this office thinking that the only thing my child got from this was a bright pink ball to match the shirt she was wearing! (at least he gives the kids presents!)

(And he asked me if he could keep the pictures!)

Irene, First of all a very big HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY TO RACHEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are quite welcome on the steriod warning, I NEVER want anyone to suffer with broken bones like Alena and most of all NOT be told the side effects. No one told us either and three different doctors prescribed it for her and three different pharmacies filled them. (GRRRRRRRRRR) Why are they doing urine tests? Alena has never had any done, I always wondered why, only answer I ever got is we don't need them (UGH) I hope can put on her very brave face for Monday. I hope they get it in the first stick. One time a nurse stuck Alena SIX times!! That poor girl was in tears before it was over, she felt so bad. And to telling her doctor she wants a "smarter" one, I LOVE THE HONESTY!!!!! What a smart girl, give them heck is what I say!!! Maybe he will try to impress her in the weeks to follow!!! My oldest daughter, Kaitlin was listening to me read off your email to my husband and she said "WOW Mom she is so lucky she got a ball, all we ever get at the doctors office is leftover Halloween stickers!!" I guess that is an HMO for ya, hee hee. I will keep you and in my prayers as I know how hard it is to wait for blood tests. Keep me posted ) A big hug to for her upcoming bravery from Alena. Dear Irene,

I had to giggle when you mentioned the urine test things in your

refrigerator. About 11 years ago when I was doing that 24 hour histamine

urine test, I slipped on my kitchen floor with my almost full jug ( about

two or three quarts). Oh my god, amber urine gushed everywhere over my

white kitchen floor!!! It was so embarrasing and so funny I called my

teenage son who started laughing too as we scrambled to mop it up!!! We

were so afraid that it would seep into the floor and eventally stink, but we

got it all up. Whew what a mess! I guess I have a strange sense of humor,

but at a time like that what else can you do but laugh. At least for the

time being I forgot about my hives.
