Guest guest
, I do not if this will be a relief or add to the worries but our daughter was on a bottle(Pediasure) until 3 1/2. Getting calories is what counts, but a bottle at that age was no longer appropiate or convenient. Peace and Prayers Mark

Guest guest
Alison, I don't know if it is an RSS trait or not however, my son until recently got most of his calories from the bottle. He was on Pedisure and then per Dr. H we switched to milk. TJ would not drink plain milk, probably because he was used to the sweet Pediasure. I started to mix 2 ounces of yogurt with 2 ounces of milk and that is what he drinks daily. At 27 months he still drinks 20 ounces of milk/yogurt, milk/banana or milk/melted ice cream daily. As far as the bottle drinking, our ST wants him off the nipple asap TJ however has other ideas. I think we own one of every sippy cup made at this point. Yesterday I think I may have found an alternative, Gerber makes a sports bottle with a no-spill lid. So far TJ has taken this attached to his bottle just fine. Perhaps you could give it a try. I did look at the Gerber Web site today and saw that additional lids (spouts) are available without having to purchase the bottle. Good luck, Meribeth

Guest guest
Hi Alison, My son is 23 months old, and we are in the midst of quite a struggle with transitioning to table food and sippy cups. It took quite a while to get the hang of eating baby food - probably not until he was about 9 months old. Right now he still eats baby food for a good part of his calories. We are in a bit of a Catch 22 because we want him to eat table food, but he doesn't eat enough to get the calories, so we still give him baby food, which keeps him used to that so he doesn't really want table food, and so on. It also seems to go in cycles for us. A few weeks ago he was doing great - about 4-5 jars of baby food a day, plus eating bites of mashed potatoes, mac & cheese etc. This past week has been awful. His daycare lady has the magic touch, and he was still eating fairly OK for her. But this weekend with us he ate almost nothing -- it was a struggle to get him to eat baby food, we went through everything in the house to get him to eat, and nothing worked. Except, cheese from a can - he can't get enough of that, but then I worry what eating only cheese will do to his digestion! So, sorry for my long answer, but your post hit a nerve after this weekend. does seem to be behind in terms of eating age appropriately. We were kind of in the mode of " whatever he wants, as long as it gets calories in him. " But now, with us looking at finding a new daycare, his quirky eating is becoming an issue. He will drink milk from a sippy cup, but still asks for a bottle. He is drinking about four 4 oz bottles of formula a day still. I would like to get him entirely on sippy cups, but the bottles are guaranteed calories, so it is tough. Sandy - Mom to 23 mos - hopefully over 20 lbs now - we'll see in two weeks, and about 31 "

Guest guest
Hi Alison Adam didn't get his first tooth until after a year of age, so he had to stay in those stages of food. My answer to you would be to get the calories in. Have sippy cups around, no pressure, just one filled with a favourite drink where he can reach it. Some other foods that he can eat comfortably on the coffee table and no pressure. He may start to explore these things by himself. You are wise to say pick you battles carefully. His age group is notorious for finding their own independence at our (the parents) expense. If he think he controls when to use or not use the sippy cup he may just to it on his own. Same with the food. 14 months is still young. Get the calories in any way you can, that is your priority. Now if he was 5 years old, it would be a different story. But not now, he may just hate change and likes the security of what he knows. Try just having the stuff around. You may find, wonder of wonders, he will actually even ask for this stuff one day soon! Guest guest
Sandy - your struggles are OH SO FAMILIAR to so many parents on this list-serve. Everyone " knows " they are supposed to be off the bottle by 12 months, but HECK, if it is the only way they will drink the milk.... same with the table food thing. One thought, comforting or not, is that ALL toddlers go through the phases your describe about , RSS or not. We just seem to worry about it more with our RSS kids because they are so darn thin!!! Our non-RSS kids won't eat for days and we think nothing about it. Crazy, huh? Guest guest
Hi Alison, I don't know if anyone else has responded yet but we are in the exact same situation you are. Our son is also 14 months old and mainly on stage 2 baby food and pediasure. Since is a twin () we have a direct comparison of RSS child to non-RSS child. It is definately taking much longer for to transition to food. We have a dietician who works with us and was over last night. Also, we saw Dr. H for the first time this past week. Between the two of them, here are some suggestions - we are starting on avocado and guacomole dip. Dr. H wants him on a higher fat content diet and the avocado is high and fat and easy to eat. Also we are trying very thin slices of banana with sour cream on them. Ritz bits were also suggested with either cream cheese or butter. This is supposed to help it " slide " down and also increase his fat intact. Also, there are toddler crackers which eats that we are trying with . has tried (and actually likes) baked potato with butter and shredded cheese. We follow a spoonful of this up with a spoonful of baby food to help him get used to swallowing real food. understands that he has to chew, but then forgets to swallow. Also, he just cut his second tooth and his first one isn't all the way grown in yet so it is still hard for thim. We are supposed to receive the balance of 's new diet by fax either today or Wednesday. If you like, I would be happy to fax/e-mail it to you when we receive it. I hope some of this helps, Judith, Steve, (14 month RSS 10 lb 14 oz) and (who is learning to stand without holding on) > Hi all! > > From reading other posts regarding Periactin, I am > assuming that it takes about an hour or two for it to > kick in and effect the appetite. Guest guest
Hi Alison I was advised by 's dietician not to introduce a training cup as children don't drink as much as they do from a bottle. is now almost 16 months (corrected age almost 13 months) and he is still drinking from a bottle and eating baby jars for babies from 4 months. It did bother me but now I am of the opinion that the important thing is to get him to eat and get calories in - I am hopeful that the other foods, textures, lumps, table foods etc will follow although I know it will be much slower for . I do give him a few sips from a trainer cup most days just to give him the practice. As regards his feeding he will not eat the baby food for 7 month old babies (it's too lumpy and thick). Hope this helps - also my pediatrician told me to stop worrying about these feeding issues - she said many children have these problems and they will come to eat 'normally' eventually' Maeve - mother of who can now climb the stairs and is very proud of himself! Guest guest
Our first visit with Dr. H went pretty well. First, I have to thank everyone for preparing us for our visit. We knew just what to expect. We brought plenty of toys, food, etc. We also brought pad, pen and tape recorder to make sure we got all the necessary info. We made sure to wait outside instead of in the claustrophobic waiting room. The " good news " is that Dr. H confirmed that is definately RSS. At least now we know what we are dealing with. The bad news is that she determined that he is growing asymmetrically (our pediatrician had said that was not) with a 1 cm difference in his legs. In addition, she told us that his left buttock was " meatier " than the right - funny, but I never looked that closely. I wouldn't want to stand him up without a diaper for that long!! started periactin on Thursday nite. So far he is taking 1/2 dosage. We will probably start the full night dose either tonight or tomorrow night. His full dose will be 1 1/2 ml 2x a day. Of course, she immediately started talking about a g-tube but we knew (from everyone else) that she would. We just have to wait and see. In the meanwhile, we are moving to a high fat diet (try doing that with baby food). The strangest thing was when she looked at 's ('s twin sister) growth chart which she had asked us to bring for comparison and told us " this one isn't growing so well either. " Boy were we supprised. She asked us to bring with us when we go back in June. Is it usual for her to see someone every 2 months? We told her that we had a stomach virus in the house for 2 weeks and that had thrown up 1x a day for 3 days straight. She told us that if every throws up we should rush him right to the hospital for an IV. At 10 lb 14 oz he can't afford to lose any calories. We decided that was overdoing it a little bit. Anyway, at least we are now on periactin and going on a new diet and will just have to wait and see where we wind up. We go to the pediatrician every month for a weight in and are supposed to call her with 's weight so she can adjust his medicine. Again, thanks to everyone for preparing us for the visit. Guest guest
I can really relate to the bottle dilemma. Dominic is 19 months old and still takes a bottle at night. I've decided he can keep that nightly bottle for awhile b/c that's the way I get him to drink about 8 oz. of pediasure before he goes to bed. I figure at this point the calories are the most important goal. I think you're wise to pick your battles and don't listen to people who say kids are supposed to be off the bottle at 12 months. About the baby food - I don't know if this will help or not - what I did when trying to transition from baby food to table food is to use a food processor and gradually make the table food thicker and thicker until Dom got used to it. I never thought there was that much difference in stage 1 and stage 3 baby food so I made my own. That way I could control the texture. I hope that make sense. F. from WV - mother to Dominic (RSS, 19 months old, 15.5 lbs.) __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I know I already responded to this question but when I read this about the avocado I had to respond again. Dominic has been eating avocados since he was about 9 months old and loves them and actually loves guacomole dip now.
