Guest guest
Angie, I just saw something a couple of weeks on a news type show (20/20, Dateline) about this. I would definately call her MD about it. There is a very rare disorder and here is a quick link to an article I found on the internet. http://www.oregonnews.com/article/20041124/FEATURES03/111240069 I hope this helps. [ ] daughter feels no pain My 3 year daughter had stitches for the 2nd time in 6 monthes last tuesday. She did not feel a thing. She did not even act as if she was hurt. The story I got from my 5 year old she that she fell and hit her head on the bathroom door. But he did not know that she was really hurt. She did not really cry when it happened. She just laid at the top of the stairs bleeding for 10 min. She was just kinda whining mommy every so often, I thought she was just tired. I obviously feel really bad. But at medpoint she just walked in the door smiling and when they gave her the numbing shots nothing not even a blink. She did not feel a thing. Her last stitches were on her foot so she could she them so there was a little response but she fell asleep is the middle of the procedure ( she had 15 stitches in her foot. And she was not sudated. She has never had a response to shots or IVs or blood being drawn. She had one IV slip out of the vain and blow up her arm and she did not even cry. If anyone has heard of this or experienced this please let me know. We are very concerned at this moment for her safety. She can not seem to feel when she is hurt. Anyway anything would be helpful. Guest guest
Hi Angie - This is something you definitely want to address with her doc - and don't allow yourself to be brushed off. Some kids just don't feel pain normally - though rare, I happen to know the mom of a child (otherwise normal) who is like this. She had to check him daily for broken bones, etc. - as well as be sure he didn't burn himself, etc.. She, herself, has a very high tolerance for pain and had an emergency appendectomy while 8 mos preg with no anesthesia because what they'd given her didn't work. She barely felt a thing - and the appendectomy was discovered by accident - she never felt anything more than discomfort equivalent to being 8 mos pregnant. So, go see your doc. Guest guest
Does your daughter have any other unusual characteristics besides the pain issue? I ask because this can be a symptom in some chromosome disorders. My daughter has smith magenis syndrome and many of these children are desensitized to pain. Guest guest
Angie.... Check on Good Morning America web site. I think a few weeks back they had another child that feels no pain at all. I know I saw something in the news recently on a little girl with the same problem. Laurie
Guest guest
Angie, While I know others will more likely to give a medical explanation for this I will relate to it in a personal way. My 5 year old grandson, Seth, has the same reaction to painful situations and injuries. He has slammed his fingers in doors and just looks at you like huh I can't get my hand out. When he was about 3-1/2 he fell against a stone hearth and had to have stitches. He has the same reaction as your daughter. He also did not react to the numbing, the only time he reacted was when he had to held down to put the stitches in his forehead. The disturbing part was the reaction of the ER staff. They were praising him and his mom for being soooo good, little did they know we would have rather him screamed at the top of his lungs. His doctor is aware of the problem but did not have much to say as far as and suggestions about treatment or coping strategies. Seth is one of the kids with apraxia that needs more stimulation not less. He has melt downs when the exciting activity stops, i.e. trick or treating is a real challenge for him. He does not seem to understand that fun will come again. The way we deal with the danger a high pain level can cause is to protect his environment with a special eye to things he might get into that other children his age might not. And when he is in a " unsafe " environment one of us must keep a watch out for any dangerous situations. He tends to mouth EVERYTHING. It has been manageable though some people do not understand I simply take a moment to explain it to them. Anyway hope it helps to know there is another family out here that experiences the same thing. Guest guest
Many children with self regulation issues and sensory integration disorders react in a very similar manner. After ruling out any medical condition such as numbness, etc. you might consider seeing an occupational therapist who specializes in integrating the child's senses to react in a particular way. Guest guest
Before we started intervention - diet, supplements, therapy - my son with autism showed little reaction to pain. He didn't self-injure much like many other children with autism do, but he would get hurt without registering pain. > > Angie, > While I know others will more likely to give a medical explanation for this > I will relate to it in a personal way. > > My 5 year old grandson, Seth, has the same reaction to painful situations > and injuries.
