Guest guest
Hi, I am a new member as you know. I read Allan's email and felt sad. As along with others he welcomed me and gave me some good advice. I have been online for over three years and have joined many online groups. I have encountered dissent on all of the groups I belong to, so am not surprised by this. I just want to wish Allan well, and thank him. I am over weight and I know it is a big part of diabetes. My mother has type 2 diabetes and I was 51 when I was diagnosed. My son who is 35 knows he is high risk for inheriting this disease. What he is doing to stave this off is staying extremely fit, and slim. Now whether he gets the disease in the future or not, time will tell. But at least he is pre warned and is doing something. I can't believe how I knew my mother had the disease and I did not think I would get it. I live a sedentary life style I am a quilter and am on the computer a lot. So would I have got the disease if I had stayed active and slim?. I like to think I might have but, that is a dream now. I have type 2 diabetes and I want to work hard to not get serious complications. My biggest enemy is my own denial and complacency. That is why I joined this group, so that I would be reading about diabetes everyday, to weaken my denial. Thank you for listening to me Beverley in Perth Western Australia. Guest guest
Beverly, this really hits close to home for me. I knew that diabetes was in my family, but didn't think it would happen to me. I had signs 15-20 years before I was diagnosed, but my doctors ignored them. I guess I did, too, but I didn't know at the time that these were symptoms of the disease, because they weren't the common symptoms that are publicized.
