Right here is a good place for him to start - the type 1s will be along shortly. Where are you? There is an excellent site for young people with diabetes; it's in Australia, but they welcome young people people from anywhere: http://www.realitycheck.org.au/ Lots of other type 1s there. Good luck - try not to worry too much. The others will allay your fears.
