Guest guest
Thanks for the info, Bill. I know that cord blood is already being used as a treatment for some types of leukemia. A little girl in our church had a cord blood transplant to treat her leukemia. I just didn't know if cord blood could some day be used to treat conditions like MSA. > __________________________________________________
Guest guest
, We never know what may be possible in the future. Once they have actually isolated the the specific cells and learned to grow them, they may find ways around problems and be able to engineer cells to grow. They feel that they have already found a way to make an inexustable supply of stem cells from the existing in vitro blastocysts. Adult stem cells have been curing leukemia for many years. We heard about experimental bone marrow transplant experiments at NIH as early as the 1960's when I was tested to see if my bone marrow could help a friend's wife life. Bone marrow transplants gave her about two additional years of life. So who knows what the future holds. However the basic research still needs to be done now. That is why they put so much time and money into the human geome project. Out of that project, they have already identified 40 genes (out of about 30,000) that can cause diseases. Here are some articles about it: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54653-2001Feb10.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54998-2001Feb10.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A45440-2001Feb8.html The second one explains why identical twins may not both get a disorder like MSA. These articles also explin why I feel the research is so important. Just like the discovery of penicillin and later the Salk vaccine for polio. My dad had polio in 1917 and it crippled him for life. I am glad to have research that will prevent pain, suffering and crippling. As a Christian, I feel Christ taught us to help our fellow man in any way we can. Take care, Bill and Charlotte ================================== M Bruner wrote: > Thanks for the info, Bill.
