Hi there , seems like we had our babies the same time and are near

the same time range with the castings and stuff, we are on the last legs

of the casts they come off next Wednesday, and he goes in the shoes, if

there are any tips you can give me about the shoes I would appreciate it!

Did you physio say he can have them off for a bit during the day, swimming

or bath or anything!

Hope to hear from you

Dear Natasha

Don't know if I am the best person to ask about the foot brace. Connor has

very small feet and there was a bit of problem with the shoes slipping so

they were put on rather tight. He just screamed and cried and wouldn't feed

properly. He was going 11/2-2 hours through the night then crying again. As

the days have gone on the crying lessened and now we are just getting bouts

of it normally after feeding which we think is because he is a bit windy and

collicky and I think he struggles when he realises he can't bring his feet

up. Anyway what we have done is just moved the feet back to the correct

position then put the shoes and bar back on and not left it off at all yet.

He has had one bath and on one of the really bad nights I actually removed

the bar as I couldn't stand it anymore (also I have 2 other children who

need sleep!!!!) I also took the degree back to 60 degrees and I have put it

back up to 70 today and he seems fine. The shoes are now done up looser as

he had pinch marks across the bridge of his foot from the buckles and he has

2 purple marks on his heels which I have covered with pressure plasters. I

just checked the feet every few hours in the first couple of days to satisfy

myself nothing was hurting and now when I check there are no red marks or

pinching anywhere so he must be crying cause he hates it. I am not checking

so much now just in the mornings and when he goes to bed. I think we can

leave it off for roughly an hour a day for bathing or swimming. Well that is

what we will be doing but the physio never mentioned leaving it off at all.

Anyway I have just come back from the hospital as I wanted her to check his

feet and she reckons they are wonderful and the heel is already more defined

so we must be doing something right. I have to say it has been very hard

hearing him cry like that, I thought I could handle it thinking it was for

the best but it is heart renching. Now it is getting a little easier so it

is worth it and hopefully eventually he will be fine all the time. Also we

changed his socks from thin ones to thick terry ones and they have been much

better.

Take care

Rach

,

Just curious- have you tried adjusting the length of Connor's brace?

It can be very uncomfortable if the feet are too close together.

He should still be able to lift his legs in the air with the brace on

(my daughter would even occasionally hit herself in the forehead!)-

does he know how to kick his feet together?

I sure hope things get better for you and Connor soon- it breaks my

heart to hear how much you're struggling- I really think that it

sounds like something just isn't right!

Rach-

My son is bilateral and we were seeing a doc in NC. He took Drew out

of the cast and put him in the DBB. We were measured by our brace

shop and then Drew was fitted with the shoes. We thought that they

looked small but we did nothing knowing we were going to see Dr. P.

We actually did not let him wear them the recommended time because we

knew Dr. P was going to put him back in cast and we did not want him

getting blisters. Once in Iowa City Drew was measured for a new brace

and shoes. It turns out the the brace shop in NC put the shoes 3

inches too close together. That is why Drew could not straighten his

legs out. AJ, my husband, is working on a comparison of the two

braces to add to the group site to show how some of the brace shops

miscalculate the placement of the shoes. The first brace shop also

had the shoes at 50 degrees instead of the 70 Dr. P suggests. If you

have any questions about your brace, we met a great lady from the

brace shop in Iowa City that you could contact her. Dr. P's sec,

Joyce, would have her info. She had a lot of great tips on putting

the shoes on and ways to make sure they were on properly. I hope that

Connor will adjust. It can not be easy on you to have a fussy baby. I

sure it breaks your heart.

So when was born? My son Drew was born April 2, 2003. From the

9 weeks of age it seems they should be close. We are in cast until

the 27th, then we start the bar back. Are you seeing Dr. P?

It does take a few days for the baby to move from casts to boots and we

certainly had problems for about a week with Josh not sleeping and looking

very uncomfortable. The boots need to be tight to keep the feet in the

properly corrected position. It is also better to leave them at the

corrected angle, the feet have been corrected to this angle so changing it

will hurt the feet rather than alleviating the pain. You may find, as we

did, that much of the problem is the colic and the inability of your son to

help the pain by lifting his legs. The boots should be at shoulder width

heel to heel. The easiest way to check this is to place the boots at the

width you think is right and hold your fingers straight out at each heel,

then measure them by holding them at his shoulders. It is important for

comfort to have this distance correct. Re the colic we got 'Baby Gaviscon'

from our health visitor and the crying stopped overnight - worth a try!!

It is 2 weeks tomorrow. I think we would be ok if he didn't have the

blisters. It is a pain cry like they are pressing or drawing not a fed up

one and I think he is quite used to the bar now, but not the pain.

It is 2 weeks tomorrow. I think we would be ok if he didn't have the
blisters. It is a pain cry like they are pressing or drawing not a fed up
one and I think he is quite used to the bar now, but not the pain.
I would never ignore the pain cry again and give Tylenol (we did it a

couple of times the first day so she would sleep). That was our big

mistake, I left them on when they were hurting. For us too, the first

indication was a purple spot. Each time I put them back on when I found

the purple spot the next time I took them off it was a sore. It really

upsets me that we're told to ignore their cries and we go against our

motherly instincts and let them just cry trying to tell us they hurt

because we've been told to keep it on. It really bothers me that I caused

my daughter such pain. Her frowns should have told me she was

hurting... she never frowns like that otherwise. Now that the shoes

aren't hurting her she could wear them for days on end without crying.

I would suggest that you find out why it's hurting him and fix the problem

before you get sores. Seeing a sore like that on a baby is just NOT

right. Healing it is another problem altogether.

He was only put in them yesterday he is getting better and is only wimpering

now, I will check them later to look for sores, the only concern I have

is that it looks like his foot keeps slipping out! It is very stressful

at the moment and I am finding it quite difficult but will plod on!

Dear Natasha

You can get micropore in the chemist it is a tape you can get them in

different widths. It's supposed to let the skin breathe. We were using it on

Connor with the melonin dressing and the mircopore tape. The thing is every

time I undid the tape it pulled another bit of Connors skin and he has spots

of blood from that aswell. I think his skin there has had enough.
