Guest guest
Dear Natasha Yes cut a HOLE............ Honestly Connor's sore is almost gone since we cut that hole and we made it high enough so when it foot slips (which is still does a bit) it still won't damage his skin. The shoes are no good to anyone else and just a hole in the heel we can't see how it can affect the correction. We only had to do it one, but he is absolutely fine with it now can bath him and everything. Also I tried all sorts of sock and have now bought baby gap newborn with the non slip bottoms, I don't know if this has made any difference but I am sticking with these for now. I will try and put a picture on later in Connors file of his shoe........... Hope it goes OK Rach -- Re: Connor back in FAB Dear Rach We now have the problem with and the blisters, what a nightmare, I thought we cracked it but there it appeared and it is really sore, it is black in colour where the blood has been. I have just put a blister plaster on it and hoping for the best but he is very grizzly. Any suggestions please let me know! Guest guest
take the DBB off. Nothing will heal it unless you stop the pressure on the sores. Casts might be your answer. :~{ poor . kori At 08:05 AM 7/4/2003 +0000, you wrote: >Dear Rach > >We now have the problem with and the blisters, what a >nightmare, I thought we cracked it but there it appeared and it is >really sore, it is black in colour where the blood has been. Guest guest
Kori and Natasha Is it the right heel that is rubbing?? (We have the buckles on the outside) I just wonder if its something in the shoe. I have put a picture on in Connors photo file of his sore just before it got infected. I will put one on of his shoe if I can........ Connors right heel was really bad and the left one was a small blister which has now gone. Rach -- Re: Connor back in FAB Thanks for your reply and great to hear that COnnor is finally on the mend and things are working out with you. I am going to try the blister plaster and if not then I will cut the hole. Will let you know how I get on. Guest guest
Dear Natasha Steve is doing a web page and he has put a photo on of Connors shoe that we have cut the hole in here is the link: http://www.talipes.co.uk/photo.html Connor is doing well in the shoes now. Is bilateral? 000 is the smallest shoe but I don't think it is actually the size of the shoe it seems to me that it is the roundness of the foot across the bridge if you know what I mean. It is like putting a ball in the shoe and putting a strap round it, well it won't stay in... that is my way of describing it. He is settled in them although I am moving his foot about 3 times a day back to the line I drew round his toes, his foot slips back slightly. I am hoping that his foot will flatten as he grows and it will be easier to keep them in I actually don't think he is going to be in these shoes for too long either a couple of months I reckon. Let me know if you can actually get them, I suppose you would have to unbolt these and glue the other ones on........ Rach -- Re: Connor back in FAB yes we have the buckles on the outside as well, it looks like that is in the smallest shoe which connor and jacob are both in, I looked at the photos and it seems like they have the same sort of blister. Is Connor happy in the boots now? I am going to ring the Dr. in the states and see if we can get a pair of those tennis shoes sent over, if you have a look in the photo section and have a look at Isabella you will see the shoe, I will do this on Monday. As they look much more comfy, I will ask if he can send over two pairs if you want a pair as well. Let me know! is now in bed and fingers crossed hopefully he will stay there alnight as my mouth ulcers are so bad I need a nights sleep! Guest guest
once the sore is there it has a difficult time healing when anything is pressing on it even if the problem part of the shoe has been modified. It just get rubbed and doesn't get a chance to heal. I don't know if blisters act the same as this sore did, it had a scab on it that got moist and wouldn't heal in the shoe. I just know that if I had to do it all over again I would have never put the shoes back on once I saw the sore. I caused more pain for her by going back to the shoes than I did just leaving them off and if it be casts it was casts. I used mole foam and cut a hole in it around the sore and put the shoes back on. helped her with some pain but the sore never healed that way. I don't know what a blister plaster is but mole foam is thicker than a bandaid by 5 or 6 times and it's made of foam so it compresses a little too. Apparently I've been bouncing so perhaps I'm a little behind in mails. How is it doing now? How does he act? It is true that babies who are comfortable in the brace don't act strangely, we experienced that. Listen to your baby, he'll tell you if he's hurting and you need to change something. I don't think getting used to the brace takes much time really, Darbi is doing so well with hers, as soon as we relived the pressure on the sore she wore it with no changes in her personality. What a different baby when it doesn't hurt. It's annoying I'm sure but she really doesn't mind it when it's on. That's what your goal is IMO. We're not here to torture our babies just so they don't have to have surgery. Kori .. Guest guest
Hello My son is 8 weeks old. He wore casts from 10 days old until last week. Then he was fitted with the DB bar and shoes. I thought the casts were hard until the shoes came along. He wore them for 4 days and developed reddness in his heels. It progressively got worse and his heels became black underneath the skin and cut on the out side. I felt so bad for him. I know he has to wear the shoes but I don't want him to feel this kind of pain all day long. I took him back to the doctor and they suggested leaving them off untill his heels heal. And then try them only at night. He is supposed to wear them full time for correction purposes. Does anyone have any suggestions them will help???? Guest guest
argh!!! What is happening here? Is this a rampant foot problem that is new to those new in the DBB or is it something else? This is exactly where we were when we got the sores. Black/purple spots that turned into open bleeding sores that didn't heal because we kept putting the shoes back on. I'm sorry but this is ridiculous, babies should not be getting sores on them from these shoes. Either we're all doing something wrong or there's a problems with the shoes. Take the shoes off, heal the sore. Go back to casts while the sore heals. Find out what is causing the sore/pressure and releive it. Cut it out if you have to. Do NOT make your baby go through more pain like I did. Do not put the shoes back on if he cries. He's telling you that the pressure is not lifted from his painful sores and they will never heal as long as the pressure is there. You can find out where it's rubbing by putting some lipstick on a bandaid that is placed over the sore. Then put a nylon on his foot and put his foot into the shoe. The lipstick will transfer to the shoe where it's rubbing. Then you can see where the problem is. Then cut the problem out!! Or, if it shows that his foot isn't going all the way into the shoe make some major changes in how you put his shoes on. We have to flex her foot up a lot and really push her heel in to make sure her heel is all the way down in the shoe. Then I pull the tongue way out over her toes and buckle very tightly. I do not lace the top holes at all. This really makes a difference in keeping her heel down where it won't rub on the insert. If I didn't do this her fat calf would pull her heel up again. ugh. I've been bouncing all weekend and messages are only now coming through. I'm very frustrated hearing all these stories about sores. This is just not right. kori At 10:01 AM 7/7/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Hello > >My son is 8 weeks old. He wore casts from 10 >days old until last week. Then he was fitted with the DB >bar and shoes. Guest guest
Dear Kori I put pressure on the middle of the strap (where it goes through the tongue) when I do the buckle up and he is done up on number 8, which just got a bit loose, so Steve has made an extra hole. I can't quite get to grips with what you are saying about the tongue as I have tried to pull it down over his toes like you said but it sits better if I pull it upwards rather than down, I can tighten it better whilst the tongue is right up and his foot bent. I have pushed his foot right forwards and tightened it and then there is a gap between heel and foot, I feel like I am not winning. The left one stays ok with his foot flat but his right foot slips up ever so slightly, I don't know why. It did it when the Physio did it up aswell. The sore is still there it is very very hard and deep rooted scab now but at least its not touching anything. How do you keep the foot flexed up whilst trying to do the shoe up? Rach, Steve, Connor (b/l c/f 16.04.03) -- Re: Connor back in FAB Rach, Do you flex his foot up really hard when you put him in the shoes? (point his toes toward his face) Then buckle it as tightly as you can? I found that once I started doing this (after seeing her heel not going in all the way through the hole)I could buckle it tighter than I ever could before. She was in pain on 5 holes but now I can buckle her CF (the one with the sore) up to 8 holes. And her toes stick out way farther than they did before as well. I also am not lacing the top holes and I pull the tongue way out over her toes as well. Helps a LOT in keeping her feet from moving in the shoes. I could see it lifting a little through the hole and that's when I started using 8 holes instead of 7. Tight shoes are ok if there's no pressure point or sore. kori > > > > Connor went back in the FAB on Friday after one week of casts > > > trying > > > > to heal his poor heels. Guest guest
oh... I'm short on time here but I'll make it quick. I don't put the shoes on with the bar. Ours has the degrees marked on the plate and with the sharpie markings it's easy to get it back on. Putting the shoes on by themselves seems to be the easiest way to get the heels down because I'm only working with one foot at a time and it has leeway to move around as needed. I loosen it up all the way and slip her in so that her toes come way over the front. Then I flex her foot up (bend the ankle and point her toes up hard by pressing on the sole of the shoe) and press like you do with my thumb or fingers (depending on how I'm angled at her feet) at the strap across the top of her foot and push on her knee to get her down in all the way. I know it *looks* better or seems more right to pull the tongue up because I kept doing that before but once I started pulling it down her ankle had room to bend (stay bent) her heel stayed down in the shoe. I tighten them up really tight too, it's difficult at best to get them tight enough and it seems like it's too tight but if she's flexed enough and her heel is all the way down she manages fine once it's buckled. So I would have to say that if it's easy to get the buckle pin into the hole that the shoes need to be tighter and another hole is needed. I really have to rank on the buckle to get it tight enough so her heel doesn't pull up a little bit. We have plastizode on the tongue so it's thicker than just the leather. Maybe this is why I have to pull it down over the toes so far? At any rate, not doing up the top holes has made a huge difference for us. And it's easier to tie with more laces to work with :~} kori At 09:44 PM 7/7/2003 +0100, you wrote: >Dear Kori > >I put pressure on the middle of the strap (where it goes through the tongue) >when I do the buckle up and he is done up on number 8, which just got a bit >loose, so Steve has made an extra hole.
