Jim

Hi, I was just browsing through you responce back to Marie and you said that

your child had no tolerance to soft foods. I was wondering what kinds of food

did your child end up eating on a dailey basis. My dd was a good eater never

picky her first year (12 months through about 27 months) and then went to

eating about 3 or 4 types of foods all mainly hard foods and now she is 4 and

basically only likes potato chips and Mcdonalds french fries. She has a severe

wheat allergie and some dyes and that is why her food is very limited, if she

could eat wheat it would be your basic crackers(gold fish, Ritz, Graham ect...)

I bent and let her have a S'more at our fire pit one night and now she is

having upper respirtory ,runny nose, and sneezing, (I dont think the smoke from

the fire pit helped either. But that is what Wheat does to her. My question

is to you is your child eating better or is it the same? I feel so bad

because I want to give her something like Rice made spaghetti but she will

literally

gag at the sight of it, What do you do?????? I hope you can shed some light

for me because Im really feeling very frustrated and worried.

Thanks

I hope you don't mind if I pop in...

I've heard that some children who take digestive enzymes actually

increase their variety in food. I'm not sure why. Also, a zinc

deficiency will deaden taste buds and sometimes also deaden the

desire to eat as a result. I gave my son 5-10 mgs of zinc

picolinate over a several month period when he was 2 years. It

literally stopped his dirt/crayon/sand eating and firmed up his

stools. It was almost as remarkable as ProEFA.

I am only mentioning these because you say your daughter has a

history of normal eating patterns. An allergy can really limit ones

love for food, too. Many apraxic or dyspraxic children have a

history of poor nursing and eating from birth. I wouldn't think

enzymes and nutrient deficiencies play a part there.

Many kids become picky eaters, and are totally normal. It is hard

to say when it crosses the line to abnormal.

Have you invested in a subscription to the 'Living Without'

magazine? My oldest has a wheat allergy (is able to eat wheat

products in moderation) and my youngest has been through the

gluten/casein free diet (from 19-26 mos). I found the internet food

stores invaluable. The best cake I've ever had is from The Really

Great Food Company (gluten/wheat free chocolate cake)... and I'm a

chocolate snob! I've done things like slice butternut squash really

thin, salted with sea salt and baked until crispy. You can get

pretty darned creative when you are desperate and have the time to

mess around in the kitchen!

Question: you say your daughter gags at the sight of rice pasta.

Will she gag at any pasta, or are you saying the rice in particular?

Hi Pam

Basically it was this Angel Hair pasta made of rice that was the real bad

deal. I wonder now if it was because I cooked it to long and it came out milky

or like alfredo, that could have played a big part too. Other rice noodles

such as rigatoni she did not gag, she gag only a little to the mashed potatoes

but that subsided when she was feeding me it, (because she didn't want it). Pam

you have an excellent point I used to give her zinc supplements but stopped

doing that oh probably since December, not sure why I stopped but maybe I might

just have to start again and see what happens. Are there other things I can

give her? She takes a tbls of a multi vitamin loaded with minerals and

vitamins and her EFA's, can I give her the Zinc supplement in addition? You

said 5

- 10 milligrams of zinc her multivitamin has 3 mg that she is getting. Thanks

for popping in Pam I really do appreciate it.

Traci,

That darned rice pasta can look so disgusting! Are you able to get

the Tinkyada brand? I find it to be the closest to regular pasta.

As far as adding more supplements: you could still add a small

amount of zinc to see if it makes any difference. I would do 5 mgs

RIGHT BEFORE BED. I know they talk about giving it with other

foods, but I have heard it is better to give zinc separately. If

she gets an upset stomach from zinc, you can have her take a few

crackers. Having her take it right before bed is the easiest time

to give it without much food.

I have a hard time with multivitamins. I often wonder if they all

cancel each other out (so many things seem to inhibit absorbtion of

others). I'm not telling you to stop, though. I give Ian and

occasional multivitamin, too.

Kids learn what works! Perhaps some of the gagging is now a learned

response. She knows she won't have to eat it if she causes a

scene? There truly are children who cannot control these

responses. I guess I question the motivation behind your daughter's

reactions since she had such a great eating history up until

toddlerhood. My son avoids lots of food, too. He has it narrowed

down to about 1/2 dozen items. However, if I get him hungry enough,

he will eat other things.

If you try the zinc again, see if you can find zinc picolinate in

capsule form. You can break the capsule open and pour whatever

amount you need in to a spoonful of 'something' that she'll take.

It should be tasteless.

I'm not sure I answered your questions!

Take care,

Pam
