The doctor who first diagnosed me said that fibroids are ALWAYS benign.

had never heard about fibroids before that. My GP (who I had to see to get

a referral to a gyno) said they could grow cancerous. Both gynos I saw

subsequently called the fibroids " tumors " and " cancer " and told me that I

needed a hysto because that was the only way to be certain that it wouldn't

become malignant even if they are benign now. My present doctor is Dr. West

and he said fibroids are always benign.

As I understand it, having fibroids does not preclude having other

conditions which may well be malignant cancer, but these are unrelated. For

instance, I have to watch out for breast cancer which runs in the family.

It's astonishing how secret fibroids are. I don't know anyone who has

fibroids and none of my friends have fibroids, let alone cancerous ones. In

the 20 months I've been in this group never heard of anyone with cancerous

fibroids. The nearest to that is a post that was made only recently of an

unfortunate lady with cervical cancer where her cervical tumor had been

misdiagnosed as a prolapsed fibroid.

There is a huge disparity in what doctors say. But the bulk of the evidence

that fibroids are benign suggests that the scare stories of some doctors

about malignancy are exaggerated.

Effie.

From what I have read fibroids are NEVER become cancerous. However

cancerous tumors of the uterus can be mistaken for fibroids, but they

are two separate things, one does not turn into the other.

Yes, this is my understanding too. Since fibroids are so very common, doctors

assume they are fibroids unless you have a family history. The only way to know

for sure what it is via a biopsy.
