Colposcopy to exclude HPV & Nortriptyline

Hi,

I have had symptoms of burning around my urethra since the summer

after what seemed to be a UTI(but no urine culture taken at that

point), multiple antibiotics, diflucan, and ultimately several negative

urine cultures, and an office cystoscopy which was negative. The

urologist thought that burning on the outside of the urethra was

gynecological so I went to a gynecologist who says she suspects

vulvodynia, but because I have some inflamed raised areas on my vulva

she wants to do a colposcopy with vinegar and possible biopsy to

exclude an HPV infection. Has anyone had a colposcopy? I am afraid

it will stir everything up, and I have found conflicting reports on

whether it's necessary to test for HPV.

She was going to prescribe nortriptyline for pain, but because I'm on

a SSRI she said she didn't want to combine them. Is anyone on a

combination of tricyclics and ssri's?

Thanks,

Margaret

I have a colposcopy a number of years ago (15-20), Margaret, for some questionable spots on my cervix. A little uncomfortable if I remember correctly. I had a couple paps come back positive. So this was for a biopsy. They numbed the cervix.

I was tested for HPV, but the test was similiar to a pap and I had no problem. I was also negative for it. I was on Nortriptyline by itself and it didnt do anything for me at all and had really bad side effects. I had urethra burning that went away after being on estrogen. I hope this info helps you. I think a combo of tri-cyclics and SSRIs can increase the possibility

of something called serotonin syndrome. I'm not an MD, but it is

something your doctor may be aware of which is why she is not wanting

to rx both. For me, amytriptiline (in the same family as

noritriptiline) along WITH neurontin has been quite helpful.
