Guest guest
Dear Amy, Wow, you are me a year ago! First of all I also live in bergen county(englewood). My son was in their preschool disabled program for 2 years and then an inclusion kindergarten last year. Everything was great-he had great OT services, adequate ST which we supplemented privately and amazing teachers. But he turned 6 and we really felt strongly about starting his religious education which really only could be done in a parochial school. He attended a sunday school program but it wasn't enough. As far as services you are eligible for not much. Bergen county special services will provide speechtherapy in private schools and you can also get supplemental instruction. You will probably have to supplement with private ST. As far as IDEA money, every district has an amount alloted by the state. You have to get a hold of the head of special services in your town (ask your case manager) and find out when the budget for idea money comes in. Then you have to let them know what you are requesting the money for. IN our case, we were requesting a shadow so our son could go into a regular k in a private school. Our name was put on a list and this past august the money was voted on by the board members and the head of special services in how it was to be allotted to all the kids who requested it. We were requesting a shadow which we got for 1/2 day. You have to be very persistent!!!!!Get to know the head of special services and check in with them every so often to see what's happening with the money. Also, know who the board members are and plead your case.I would also recommend a woman by the name of Varacco in bergen county-I don't have her #. But she was very helpful to us in the past. She's tough and knows her stuff. Good luck and let me know how it goes. mother of Aryeh age 6. > > > Hi! > My daughter's developmental pediatrician recommends her attending > a " regular " kindergarten coupled with intensive speech therapy > sessions on the side once she ages out of her special ed preschool > next year. Guest guest
, Thanks so much for your good advice. I left a voicemail message for Vericco. A number of people have also referred me to her. Would it be possible for me to reach you off the group list? (I acutally tried but my message might have hit your " spam " or " bulk " folder) Thanks again Amy, mother to Simone > > Dear Amy, Wow, you are me a year ago!
