When these women remove gluten from their diets they often see a marked improvement in their PCOS symptoms. She has also seen dramatic improvement in cholesterol levels, thyroid function and weight loss in women who have changed their diets to avoid gluten. Guest guest
Arline, Thank you for sending this article. Makes sense to me, and may explain why I gained weight in spite of not eating much. I hope I can find a primary care physician soon and see if we can at least start with the bloodwork until I can get to a GI dr to check out something else for me that might be able to send off for the other test thru Enterolab. Question for you though. Can gluten issues show up on a stool culture if a GI dr ordered one? Guest guest
Gluten is more than wheat...just because a product says it's wheat free does not mean its gluten free. Other grains have gluten in them.

Guest guest
Hi Kristy, I don't know any other lab in the US that tests for celiac with stool tests or rectal challenges. Dr. Fine's tests are state of the art, divised by him (and I suspect nobody else knows how he does it as it involves patents, etc.) and nobody else would be allowed probably without a cost to use his tests if they knew. One can't just steal somebody else's tests. The truth is nobody wants to muck around with somebody's excrement and Dr. Fine and his employees deserve the Nobel prize for medicine for finding out how to really diagnose people for this. And if one could find a lab that does it, it would likely cost a lot more. In Europe and other parts of the world there are rectal challenge tests and other stool tests. If your doctor orders the gluten sensitive test from Enterolab, likely insurance will pay for it but doctors are so ignorant about this that I doubt you would find anybody to do it. It depends on the contracts with labs that the doctors have. If they belong to certain medical groups they can't go against their contracts. The blood celiac tests cannot diagnose gluten sensitivity with it's whole different set of genes, etc. I don't know why you would want to bother with the blood tests at all but no matter what I seem to say about this there are always some who have to go back to the people who can't help them. That is their choice and I guess I will just have to keep saying it. Sometimes we have to take our health into our own hands and we don't need to depend upon the daddy doctors to give us approval because they don't know how anyway. This is probably one of them. Many people's insurance will just pay for Enterolab if they send the claim in. Many won't. Like it or not our class system stinks in every way but it mostly is exemplified in the medical system. I could go on and on and on. I won't. Dee will kill me. I don't want to talk about blood tests anymore at all with anyone. They aren't any good. They are worthless. If you want to stay sick take the blood tests.--Or you can always just stop eating the stuff--gluten and dairy. That would be the smartest thing to do. I don't think there is any way that you are not gluten and dairy intolerant, Kristy. I would like to see you improve your health. That is why I have been here ranting for years. I am getting older and weaker and weaker but my mouth is still going strong. Arline ;o) > > Thank you for sending this article. Guest guest
The answer is wheat, barley, rye, oats, anything that contains these things and if they are smart--dairy, too. Dairy is not gluten but so many are sensitive to it also. If sensitive to it, it does probably as much damage but there is less research on this. If you want to know, get tested. I know a great lab with accurate tests. ;o) We aren't talking about allergies. We are talking about autoimmune attacks on any part of the body that will tear it up. Guest guest
Arline, I have my ways to research and find a dr who will listen to me to make sure that the insurance will cover the cost of the stool test if I do it. I would be checking in to Celiac to see if I have it to see if it explains why I can't lose weight not b/c I'm looking for my health to improve. My health is not going to improve. I just need to know if I have it or not b/c I'm trying to fill in the puzzle of my ever continuing complex health situation. As for dairy intolerant I can tell you that I'm not having problems with dairy. But as for the blood tests, it's the best I can do under the circumstances since I don't have a job. I understand why you may not want to talk about the blood tests but for some of us who are trying to find out what is going on it is the best we can do due to finances like myself. Thank you for the article and I will see what I can do after the first of the year in spite of my limited finances. Guest guest
With a gluten-free diet for somebody who is sensitive, how long does it take to see an improvement in symptoms? Guest guest
I just wanted to put in my 2 cents about losing weight. I have been trying to lose 10 pounds since 1995 and no matter how hard I tried or dieted I could not do it. Then I actually gained 10 pounds and was getting scared because I surely was not overeating or anything like that. About 2 months ago I stopped eating after 7 PM and have lost 20 pounds. I think it was water mostly because it came off in bunches. Like two or three pounds overnight sometimes. Anyhow I am very happy and have stabilized at my ideal weight of 140 pounds. Guest guest
I know I am paranoid by nature. I would pay (or go in debt, because I don't have it) a million dollars if I could get rid of this for good, and it sounds like enterolab is on the up and up and on the cutting edge. I just want to make sure I don't get " taken. " That's why I'm so glad for this list. It's saved me from chasing my tail on things that don't work and pointed me in the right direction on things that would've taken me a long time to find on my own. Guest guest
There are no silly questions. Everyone is just trying to figure things out for their own and not just trust blindly, as we seem to have done with so many doctors. Arline or others, what does a gluten-free diet look like? What would your standard day or week look like? Thanks! Becky Any questions? Get answers on any topic at Yahoo! Answers. Try it now.
