Question re: Yogourmet starter being designed only for Yogourmet maker

I’m looking for a yogurt starter but don’t

have/use a Yogourmet yogurt maker. It appears the Yogourmet starter is designed

only for that maker. This is what it says along with the starter at one of the

sites that sells it:

“This starter must be

used only with the Yogourmet Multi yogurt maker (or our earlier model, the

Yogourmet II yogurt maker). CBA yogurt starter requires an incubation period of

12 to 15 hours, during which time the temperature must be increased gradually

from 23°C to 44°C (73°F to 112°F), The Yogourmet Multi yogurt maker meets this

requirement with a heating system specially designed to heat in this pattern.”

Is this strictly true? Do any of you use this starter

without using a Yogourmet maker?

Or, perhaps I should ask this: if you don’t have a

Yogourmet maker, what kind of starter do you use?

I currently use a very good organic plain yogurt that works

very well as a starter. But one person on the list said that she reacted better

to yogurt when made with starter rather than yogurt itself. I want to try

making it with starter to see if there’s a difference for me.

paying at the grocery store. They shipped promptly, and there was a

really good " best by " date (I'm thinking 2011).
