What I'm > wondering is, will most people's cholesterol go up if they eat > saturated fat or not? > That's one of those " how long is a piece of string " questions. It's all a matter of balance - how much sat fat in proportion to carbs and protein, and also in relation to weight, physical activity etc. I eat saturated fat - a rasher of bacon and an egg at breakfast, a little in my red meats, a little in some processed foods. But I also eat olive, peanut, canola and other unsat oils, some coconut (which is both) and so on. But if you add it all up over the day, it's probably less than a quarter of the total fat I used to eat - and my triglycerides and total cholesterol have gone down. Guest guest
> I believe the cholesterol you eat does NOT affect your " body " > cholesterol. I don't think that's true. Your body recycles the cholesterol that goes into making bile and also picks up ingested cholesterol. If these aren't enough for the body's needs, it will make its own. What you may have read is that the ingested cholesterol doesn't have as much effect or something. For me, taking Zetia to reduce absorption of ingested cholesterol made a tremendous amount of difference, and a statin alone did zip. Guest guest
Yeah, that's the way it worked for me too. I was at max dose of Lipitor which didn't really reduce whatever it was supposed to. That didn't happen until I added the Zetia, which worked great. So the statins may not work on people on LC diets, which are usually not low fat. Gretchen

Guest guest
I am on a lowish carb, moderate fat diet and take lipitor. The effect on my lipids was tremendous. My total cholesterol dropped from the high 300s to app 170. My ldl and tris are in the mid to high 70s as is my hdl. At this point in time, because of pain issues I am no longer exercising. I had my labs yesterday, will have results this coming Monday. Helen

So the statins may not work on people on LC diets, which are >usually not low fat. It's true that LC diets aren't devoid of fat, but we never snacked on cubes of butter, either. My diet now is still LC and has less saturated fat, but I still use butter on occasion, eat beef, pork and lamb, etc. Just not as much as I used to. I've cut the coconut oil out completely. When I started Lipitor (20mg) my cholesterol went from over 300 to the 160s. They increased the Lipitor to 40mg to get the " bad " cholesterol down lower, and I've been doing the wine thing to raise " good " kind. Blood work near the end of the month will tell me what's happening now. Back to fats again, the reason most folks get hungry when dieting is that diets tend to cut out most of the fats even though fat doesn't make fat. It's fat that keeps you from getting hungry right away so I'd think that LC folks would qualify for being less apt to feel HUNGRY an hour or so after eating. That's something I wouldn't call a loss of appetite, but it could certainly work the same way. What has made me have less of an appetite is the metformin I take. When I first started taking it there were days when I didn't care if I ate at all. I think I had several days where all three meals were a couple of high-fiber WASA crackers with cheddar cheese and thin slices of tomato on top. I've been working on weight loss since I was first diagnosed but after starting the metformin it didn't seem like the struggle it had been. I don't know exactly what I weighed when I started taking it, but I seem to be going down at least 1/2 lb most days. Enough so my arms, which already were starting the " bat wings " now look like I might really be able to fly using the loose skin that hangs down. To add insult to injury my boobs are probably 40 " long " . (sigh) Sky (who wants one of those complete make-overs)

My question, though, was about saturated fat, which I thought affected most people's blood lipids negatively. I'll take this opportunity to say goodbye to everyone on this list. I've learned a lot from you. However, I also learned today that I have metastatic breast cancer to my bones, which I need to focus on right now. So I'll be going no mail on this list and just checking in on the groups page from time to time. Best of luck to all of you in your journeys to health.
