Hi and thanks for your private message back to me as well!

Can't help notice your email -did you work in animation?!

(I did for years and loved it!)

How to know why toxins are where they are?

Can't 'just' go by what was on the exact spot anymore.

Have to find the links -but there is recent news on this subject

Toxins area showing up in areas you wouldn't expect now

(like in wildlife and affecting reproduction

even in New England -in the middle of nature)

In Union NJ near where I grew up, after they tore down the Bradley's

on Avenue which used to be a store called Two Guys -and had

to halt construction of building a Home Depot because of the amount

of toxins found there. Yet another superfund site on a spot where

there were no factories or anything on it prior.

So as far as it being farmland prior and having no idea why there

appears to be a higher number of affected children -it may have less

to do with pesticides then we all may want to auto assume. That may

however may be the answer that some may want you to think -but can

tell you that in some areas -there's just no way of knowing where

the toxins are coming from.

It is apparent there are more areas like the following when you are

living in " industrial areas " -so how close is industry to the

farmland and what type? You can throw gunk away for just so long

and guess eventually the world will spit it back up somewhere -even

if it's not in the exact same spot -but somewhere in the same

general vicinity.

For example -in the stories about the black ooze near where I lived -

that happened in a park (!) A park that kids would play ball in.

Some says years and years ago however -before it was a park there

was some type of manufacturing place there and back when there were

no regulations as to what could be dumped -but nobody knows. So

where would all the dangerous toxins come from that rose and are

rising out of the water and killing birds and all in the following

story -the one that was one of the reasons our family moved to

Florida? Could it be illegal dumping? Could it be water that ran

or is running underground carrying something from another area

over? Could it be a soil thing, the way the soil rids itself of

toxins over time that are not meant to be there? Rain? Who knows. I do

know that the one below was fully reported by me and others to the

EPA and the CDC in regards to our membership, apraxia, and the

toxins found near our large group. In the stories below about

the " black ooze " in NJ

http://www.eohsi.rutgers.edu/pdf/Tony%20Sclafani%20-%20Park's%20soil%20is%20high\

ly%20toxic.pdf

(and it's stories in more than one way when you read the following -

what a bunch of spinned crap they put out there for the intelligent

NJ families in the area to read!)

-it's today one of the EPA super fund sites -and last I heard the

ooze was still rising up from someplace and that no -they don't know

where it's coming from either. I also reported about 's son

who lived right there -who flat lined in his gut -most severe

and dangerous constipation example in this group. I was contacted

by Brockovich law firm because one of our members let them know

what we are finding.

There are many other archives on this in this group -here's enough

to keep you busy reading for a bit!

Please let us all know what you find out in your searching.

Subject: Re: new to list

I love this Gin!

" At the expense of sounding like a saddo Hippy I've recently been

viewing 's issues - or how we're trying to tackle them - like a

Rainbow. By that I mean I know I have to look all around the box &

outside it & behind it and in front of it & pull at the various

strands to attempt to unlock this multi-facted disorder. OT / PT/

ST / sequencing / social / diet. All mental, physical, psychological

& biological approaches have to researched. No wonder this group

list is so active! "

I've had many conversations both on and off list about this -and

again...I don't think our kids fit into any one box. I really

believe that 'most' of our kids have something new -or a mutated

version of what was around before. There has been a dramatic rise

in our type of children -so the question is...why?

When I heard about -I didn't just cry for -I cried

because of -and I cried because I'm not sure what is going on

with any of our children and why they have these similar problems,

and why it's not researched and documented.

When I wrote Canaries in the coal mine I put a quote in there about

this " black ooze " that was rising from the soil of a stream in a

park that is now closed. Heard the black ooze still is rising and is

between one and four feet deep, nobody yet that lives in the area

knows for 'sure' what it's from - in a town not far from where we

lived...just one of many areas of Jersey where we had a pocket of

apraxic children.

The ooze was " Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs,

phenol, cadmium, chromium and lead " " They're (the substances) all

bad. I wouldn't choose to live there. I wouldn't choose to interact

there if I had a choice, " said Buckley, executive director of

the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, part

of Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry

in Newark.

" This is not a healthy place for kids to play. There's no doubt

about it, " said Buckley, who recommended examining and monitoring

some children for any effects. "

http://www.thnt.com/thnt/story/0,21282,596491,00.html

" Examining and monitoring our kids " ?!! Try they basically told us

to not put away the kites and balls and " come on down " to play some

more! (read below) They downplayed (and in spite of their lame

attempt to do so -this was never picked up by any large media who

won't be bullied -like Time) by saying the park was " only " closed

due to " high levels of asbestos " ...actually in the new article the

correct phrase is " Chunks of exposed asbestos " 10-12 feet high. The

first article I read -which was pretty much right before we moved -

was about dead birds found in the black ooze and how town officials

said " they didn't believe it (the ooze) was harmful " and I wrote

here " oh yeah it's every day that when a bird is ready to die they

fly around looking for some black ooze to drop dead in "

The town?...is the town we lived 10 minutes from. The town that

just moved from. The town that little grew up in. As

said to me today - " it was all around me " .

Why didn't we know..well when the birds were found dead there were

spin articles like this

" PMK will probably recommend removal of the black substance and

asbestos tiles and other remediation measures, ston told the

Borough Council.

ston gave the council an update yesterday on what his company is

doing and what it has found so far. Among the results:

The black ooze, which so far has mystified environmental officials,

is as shallow as six inches and as deep as four feet in different

parts of the park. An area found to contain " marginally high "

concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is an anomaly,

ston said, and does not pose a substantial health hazard.

While they do not know what the black substance is, tests have

determined that it is not hazardous waste.

A large quantity of stacked asbestos tiles extends underground about

10 feet to 12 feet into the park from the banks of the Bound Brook.

The park was closed in mid-July after Spiegel, president of

the Edison Wetlands Association, a nonprofit environmental group,

discovered the asbestos. The federal Environmental Protection Agency

told borough officials about the black substance late last year.

Although tests determined there was no imminent health hazard, the

borough decided to ask PMK Group to investigate and create a cleanup

plan. "

http://www.gsenet.org/library/11gsn/2002/gs020812.php

And even though the ooze is still there -are they warning any

parents today? Well let's just check more recent articles from the

area and see what they have to say:

" It's a clean, safe community that offers them everything that young

families need, " says English, a lifelong resident who has been

director for four years. " It's one of the reasons why people stay

here. "

The parks vary in size, from Willow Skate Park, the smallest at 2.18

acres, to Veterans Park, the largest with more than 30 acres.

But Veterans has been closed since last summer after officials began

investigating the discovery of asbestos tiles and a mysterious black

ooze surfacing at the park.

Borough officials, who have submitted a cleanup plan to the state

Department of Environmental Protection for its approval, hope to

open the park by the end of spring.

Because Veterans Park has the largest ball field, English had to

reduce the number of adult male teams in the softball league last

year, a popular activity among residents, he says.

But removing possibly hazardous materials is not the only work being

done at borough parks.

Putnam Park is the midst of a complete renovation, with the first

phase of the project to be completed by March.

The project will be adding a jogging path, off-site parking and a

volleyball court, English says. "

http://www.c-n.com/c-n/artman/publish/article_64.shtml

" clean, safe community " in one line and " mysterious black ooze " in

the next. (spin way to say " " Concentrations of polychlorinated

biphenyls, or PCBs, phenol, cadmium, chromium and lead rising out of

the water for some unknown reason and killing local wildlife " )

The way it's written now it's " ooohhh -let's pack a lunch and take

the kids to see the " mysterious black ooze "

Well pretty soon you will be able to do just this!

" In 60 days, our park will be reopened, our children will be back

playing, " Mayor Dan Gallagher said after the borough got $250,000

from the state Department of Environmental Protection last month. "

Oh -and the " not toxic " part they tried to tell us when they lied, I

mean spinned... "

" Used as a coolant in electrical equipment, PCBs have been linked to

cancer and developmental disabilities. Cornell-Dubilier, a former

electronics plant, has the highest concentrations of PCBs of any

site in New Jersey, according to state and federal environmental

officials.

While PCBs usually are immobile in soil, those at Cornell-Dubilier

have been dissolved by other chemicals dumped there and are

pervasive in soil, groundwater and dust. "

http://sierraactivist.org/article.php?sid=33550

One of the substances found in the oozing toxins was phenol. In

medicine -they use a phenol block to basically create an apraxic

situation -a motor planning block that strips the myelin. EFAs have

remyelinating properties...is this one possible reason why they

work? Since the mixture of chemicals changed the PCBs...it's

logical to ask -what did the mixture do to the lead, or phenol...or

the other toxins? (don't put turtles down the sewer in Jersey to

try to make Ninja Turtles -that is just a cartoon)

I'm not writing this to scare anyone...just be aware that there

could be more than meets the eye not just in diagnosis -but for

cause -and treatment. Watch for spin -and research. There is a

rise in our kids -and we don't know why -and nobody knows for sure.

We have found as a group that like Gin said -multisensory works -out

of the box works. (and starting 'most' of our kids in kindergarten

at 6)

Toxins do change the body -and our kids may present as having this

diagnosis or that...but years ago I bet they didn't have the exact

mixture of toxins -and the amount -they have today.

This is why I hope that the diagnosis for is wrong -just like

some have been wrong for other points I've raised in the past. I'm

not looking to be a rebel to disagree -I just see things different

at times and as an inventor my mind just goes.

And I hope now you all know why hearing about poor little

...one child...is praying for one child that could represent

hundreds more. It's for all the canaries in the coal mine - our

children who don't have a voice for themselves.

http://www.cherab.org/news/Save.html

And the way the

local press took a spin angle -makes you wonder who's behind the

cover up. One of my MD friends doesn't like when I write this

stuff -is afraid someone will try to shut me up. But all of you

know now too.

And about the recent news I said I had to find (thanks Sallie

Bernard!)

http://briloon.org/mercury/ -Scientific paper'

Article on this subject of why we need to look at soil,

birds, insects etc.

Higher levels of mercury seen polluting region

By Beth Daley, Globe Staff | March 8, 2005

Mercury contamination is more pervasive in New England than

researchers previously believed, according to a study being released

today that indicates the toxic substance appears to be polluting the

environment in ways that scientists previously did not think

possible.

The four-year study in Northeastern United States and eastern Canada

also indicates significant levels of mercury in forest songbirds and

other animals that researchers did not suspect were ingesting

mercury.

The study, comprising 21 papers being published in the journal

Ecotoxicology, also identifies nine hot spots in the region,

including in the lower Merrimack River area in Massachusetts and New

Hampshire where mercury levels in animals such as brook trout,

loons, mink, and eagles are alarmingly high. In some locations, the

levels appear to be interfering with some species' reproduction.

" The impacts of mercury go well beyond what anyone would have

envisioned yesterday, " said Bender, director of the Mercury

Policy Project in Vermont and cochairman of the state mercury

committee, who was not involved in the study. " It doesn't look like

there are any limits on mercury's reach. "

The $300,000 study, financed by the US Department of Agriculture's

Northeastern States Research ative, enlisted 50 scientists to

analyze existing data of mercury in animals, soil, rivers, lakes,

and streams. It also looked for the first time at mercury levels in

such species as salamanders and songbirds in the region.

Mercury can damage the developing brains of fetuses and children and

can cause a host of physiological and behavioral problems in

wildlife. The naturally occurring element is released into the air

by coal-fired power plants and eventually falls to land. The

Northeastern areas of the United States and Canada have signifi-

cantly cut mercury emissions. But mercury continues to drift from

elsewhere in the country, and amounts harmful to humans and wildlife

persist in the environment.

For years, scientists and public policy makers have focused on

mercury that is emitted from power plants and incinerators and falls

into lakes and ponds, where it is easily converted into its toxic

form when it interacts with bacteria in freshwater sediment. Across

the region, pregnant woman and children have been warned not to eat

many freshwater fish because the creatures can pass on the mercury

concentrated in their flesh.

But today's report indicates that the same type of toxic conversion

may be happening on mountaintops and forests, with mercury falling

out of the sky onto tree leaves and then dropping onto the moist

forest floor.

Tiny insects then take up the mercury, and as insects are eaten by

larger creatures the mercury accumulates in greater concentrations

up the food chain, said C. Evers, executive director of the

BioDiversity Research Institute who helped conceive the research

idea with Tom Clair, of Environment Canada, that country's

environmental protection agency.

" These terrestrial systems have been completely overlooked, " said

Evers, who wants far more monitoring of the environment. " It's a

complicated story, and we don't have all the answers yet. "

The scientists found elevated mercury levels in Bicknell's thrushes,

a small, forest bird with a distinctive song. In one instance, a

Northern waterthrush from the Sudbury River in Massachusetts was

found to have mercury levels higher than each of 100 juvenile bald

eagles tested. Eagles, at the top of the food chain, can have signi

ficant mercury levels presumably because their diet includes fish.

Thrushes like to eat insects.

High concentrations of mercury in salamanders were found in Acadia

National Park.

Mink and otter in Massachusetts and Connecticut, which have

historically been tested for mercury, continued to show levels in

their fur that are known to harm their health, although the levels

have declined in recent years.

Scientists are just now beginning to document mercury's impact on

the songbirds and salamanders because those creatures have not been

widely studied.

However, based on what they know about aquatic species such as

loons, they say there could be ecological health effects. Loons in

Maine and New Hampshire with high mercury levels have 40 percent

fewer young than those with less mercury, according to previous

research by Evers.

The hot spots in the Northeast include the Rangely Lakes Region,

Upper Penobscot River watershed, and parts of midcoast and Down East

Maine, all of which are home to otter, mink, brook trout, yellow

perch, bald eagle, and the common loon whose mercury levels already

exceed safe levels.

Hot spots were generally de- fined as areas with two or more species

that had mercury levels above known thresholds for adverse health

effects.

The study is being released as environmentalists press for federal

mercury emission limits for coal, fire, and power plants. While the

nine states, including Massachusetts, have or are attempting to put

mercury controls in place, there are more than 100 new coal- fired

power plants proposed in the United States, and environmentalists

fear more mercury will be released into the environment.

" Wildlife is truly on the front line of the mercury contamination

problem, " said Felice Stadler, mercury policy specialist for the

National Wildlife Federation. " This new research makes a compelling

case for why we need to reduce mercury pollution today. "

Thanks so much ... I had no idea.

This is huge. This is not a genetic condition! This is the

enviromental and physiological aftermath of pollution.

I pulled the report by my zipcode (60544)from the EPA. I was

absolutely amazed at the amounts of air pollution released into the

air near my home, as well as the amount of companies allowed permits

to contaminate the water and sewers in my community. I am sad that

so many families go uninformed... you will never know (or care!)

until something happens to you.

I used my husbands e-mail address to become a member since he had a

account... he was a 3-d animator for about 3 years. He loved

it until his company closed its art department 2 years ago. He is

now a product developer for a custom car accessory company. He

wishes he was doing something else...like making cartoons again!

I on the other hand, am a hairstylist. I am now considering the

risk I exposed to, in utero. There is nothing I can do about

it now, so no use blaming myself due to ignorance on the subject,

but I have worked with chemicals nearly everyday of my life for the

last, almost, 10 years. I left the salon 1 year ago to work from

home. I still work with chemicals, but on a very limited basis. I

have since just begun the venture of real estate investing. One of

my main reasons for finding a new career is to eliminate myself and

family from the exposure to chemicals. I was already tested for MS

the year before I concieved , with a negative diagnosis. ( Which

is interestingly also a condition that has to do with the

deterioration of the myelin that coats the nerves...) It is a common

diagnosis among hairstylists and nail techs. I also did nails in

the salon for about 3 years, but was exposed to those chemicals by

proxy, regardless. I am only 28 years old and fear that someday I

will pay the price myself for that exposure. I already suffer from

arthritis as well as some recall memory loss. Time will tell...

I will begin investigating this aspect to the condition further. I

not only want to find a cure, I want to PREVENT this from happening

to anyone else's family or child.

Adovocacy is the cure. Speaking up... and appropriatley so.

I will keep you posted in weeks and months ahead of any information

that I find.

It would also be helpful to me if the any other memebers of the site

can recall any information regarding exposure to chemicals during

their pregnancies that would raise any concerns. What professions

were the mothers in during their pregnancies? What type of

enviroment are they living in currently, and at the time their child

was diagnosed? Has every member of this site pulled an EPA report

for their zip code? I would be interested in hearing from anyone

who is willing to share their information...

Thanks again, ... for all that you are doing! You are amazing!
