Guest guest
, Welcome to the group. I have never heard of Megestrol but try a search on the internet on google and you should find some info. You sound like you have been through a lot. I was taking b/c pills for my fibroids but they really couldn't help. I finally had a UAE and am better now. I still take the b/c pills, but to prevent pregnancy now. I would actually like to get off of them since I feel bloated on them all the time and they keep extra weight on. Take care. Guest guest
Welcome, The only time I heard a doctor say a myo is impossible is when it was actually impossible for them to do it. 5cm and smaller are options for myos. As you read the post and search the archives you will find that there have been substantially larger fibroids removed. You have fellow-Michiganders posting with you. At least in E. MI and 2 in the west. I am a patient of both doctors the ladies have already seen. Both either have had, or will have myomectomies done. Please search for a more compentant doctor. We see Drs. Dodds and Young, who have offices in Kalamzoo and Grand Rapids - phone(616) 988-2229, and Drs. Arnold Advincula and Quint at the University of Michigan Where abouts are you located? Good luck and I hope this information was helpful. Do keep in touch. Jo corona806 wrote:Hello My name is , I'm new to this group. I've been reading the posts about a month. I'm ready to share my story. I'm 42 and I live in Michigan. My Story sarted in 1999. One day I sarted my period and it did'nt stop for a month I knew this was'nt right so I went to my PCP and she refered me to a gyno. I put all my trust in this DR. to help me. At that time I thought He would. He said that before he could do anything the bleeding had to be stopped so he put me on BC pills. Once the bleeding stopped I went back for a exam. the Dr. did a vaginal U/S than thats when he told me I had fibroids, of course he told me they were not cancerous and that the bleeding could be controlled by BC pills. So I told him Ok no questions asked. How gullable was I to put my trust in a Dr. and not ask questions. So I left out of that office not knowing anything but the BC pill would contol the bleeding. I did'nt Know the size, where It was located nothing. I could just kick my self. Well anyway the BC pills worked for about two years. than the real problems started happening. I called my Dr. up and told him I was having very bad cramps so he perscribed 800mg of Ibuprofen. I eat that like candy. I would hurt even before my period started than there was the heavy bleeding and the clots, and the spotting constantly. The accidents at work which happen twice I had to go Home. Im glade I have a nice boss. Going to the bathroom every half hr. to change tampon and pad. I also have a leaky bladder. Its driving me nuts. But when I started having lower back pain (located on the right side.) I told my self that was enought. I would have this pain a week before my period and during my period. The only thing about this pain I would only have it when I had to walk. I could'nt do my job at work. A simple thing as walking became a chore. My legs felt like jello was very weak in the legs. I turned white as a ghost and felt as if I would pass out. This pain would double me over. I would have to stop walking. The only way I can desribe this pain is like tention on a rubber band the more walking I did the more tention on the rubber band.Than there was the contractions. I've had two children so I know what they feel like. That happen only when I used the toilet or when I got in my car to drive somewhere. When I had my yearly pap Sept. 2002. I told the Dr. all what was going on. I still did'nt want a hyesterectomy but felt he needed to do something else. He never offered any other options other than pills. So he said he would change my Bc pill to a stronger one,but I would have to quit smoking so I agreed.(after that pap smear I bleed for 21 days stright) I would do anything to stop the heavy bleeding.First I would have to qiut smoking for a month before he even give me the new pill. So I went on the patch. It took 6 days to quit. Smoke free as of sept. 15 2002. The Dr gave me the new pill and said to come back in three months. Well the heavy bleeding stopped but still had the back pain. I could'nt take any more pain I was ready to have the uterus out. I went Back to the Dr. in three months and told him I could'nt deal with the pain any more he did a U/S Thats when he hit me with that the pain I was having was not associated with my fibroids. He said he did'nt doubt I was having the pain. But the pain I was having had to be caused by something else. He said the same thing about my bladder problem not associated with my fibroids. He also said I have a tilted uterus. But when he told me I was'nt a canidate for any kind of surgery, and I should try and let this new BC pill to work....well guess what? I have a new Dr. I came prepared with all sorts of questions. My fibroid is 5cm and have two other small ones. The larger one is in the wall of the uterus. My Dr. said she has seen larger. She said I cant do a myo cause it is to large.and I cant do ablation, I think thats what its called where they take the lining out anyway she said i cant do that because its in the wall of the uterus. So she has given me a option of UAE or she recommends to use the less evasive method first. So she offered me a drug called Megestrol. Has anyone heard of it? So i've been taking it for about a month. It's suppose to stop my period. As of today i'm suppose to start, we'll see how it goes. So far no back pain and i'm starting to feel like my old self except for the leaky bladder, i guess i can live with that. My question is to anyone out there have they used this drug? And if anyone knows of the long term effects of taking it. I forgot to ask my doctor, i don't see her until July. In the begining i said i was going to tell you my story, but it's probaby a novel by now. All responces are welcome. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
>She said I cant do a myo cause it is to large. , 5cm doesn't sound too large to me. Location is a factor in deciding what kind of operation is best, but myo (laparoscopic or abdominal) is definitely an option to consider. Did she say why it was too large? Stopping smoking is a very good thing no matter what. It's also good that you weren't pressed into hysterectomy. Things could have been a lot worse. Sorry, I don't know about the drug. Good luck! What ephedrine may have done to your life span otherwise, I don't know. If it causes heart damage other than fib or damage to other organs, I assume your doc is scheduling you for the appropriate tests. I used to work out with small weights, but since developing afib, I can't. It triggers afib or multipple ectopics a minute starting a few hours later. Guest guest
Hi, glad you found this board. It has been very helpful and informative to me. Afib is not life-threatening in and of itself. You need to take the precautions your doctor told you about, and ask about being put on Coumadin to prevent stroke. I am surprised you were not put on Coumadin, which is a blood thinner. You are young to have afib, but it does tend to afflict men more than women, and for some reason, is a condition seen in endurance athletes. Ephedrine is not something you should continue to use, but did not necessarily cause your afib. Caffeine and alcohol are other stimulants that you should cut back on if you use them. There are lots of good theories but no doctor will tell you that we know exactly why we develop afib. In fact, many will say that, if you have to have a heart condition, this is preferable over all the others. Not much consolation, but there are treatments, both pharmacological and surgical. Some people benefit from dietary adjustments. The surgical procedures can be done through catheters, so there is no need to have your chest opened up. Most of us are treated by electrophysiologists, cardiologists who specialize in ³electrical problems.² There is a lot of good info on the Afib Support web site and other web sites. The more you inform yourself, the more you can proactively participate in your treatment. Don¹t despair and keep a positive attitude, which is likely to help your heart! -- Kathleen Stept (Dofetilide 250mcg bid, Diltiazem 120 mg, Coumadin 5mg, baby aspirin), , Mississippi > Hi, I am a 32 year old male.
