I just got back from seeing Joanie,

The nurse said she had her eeg tonight. She did not tell me (my mom) what

the results were. She is still not responsive. I thought she looked me in

the eyes but her eyes were going back and worth. She needs our prayers for

sure. I will try and go again tomorrow when I get back from the docs. I

left her mom a note saying who I was and where I am staying. Can someone

fill me in on what Joanie had done. I thought it was the an removal and abi

thing....but I don't think that would of put her in this condition...but as

always I have been wrong before.

Her last name is Emerick, she's in ICU so I'm not sure what the visiting

policy is.

Re: Joanie Update

Pete,

I will go by there tomorrow. I am at Seaton right now. What is her last

I will have my first visit with hasen (whatever) tomorrow who talked to

Joanie's mother while we were up there. And this is a question I will ask

him for sure. I need to know for my family's peace of mind.

Hi All

We have the results of Joanie's EEG are in and it is not good. The EEG

taken yesterday showed minimal brain activity. Joanie's mother is there with

here, and Joan shows no sign of recognizing her mother or responding to

stimulus.

At this point the prognosis is still uncertain as there is a chance she

could recover from this. Either way, she will remain on life support in her

current condition and they will perform another EEG (they didn't say when...

but I would assume a few days to a week) to check on her condition. The

doctors indicate that she could remain unchanged for months.

The best response we can do right now is pray for Joan and her family.

There's no direct explanation, like said, her previous surgeries

played a factor. They did mention there is still tumors inside of her, but

did not say whether or not that played a part.

The sequence of events as I know it:

After surgery when they tried to extubate her, she vomited, so they

re-intubated for her safety. At this point she was conscious and conversing.

On Sunday (I believe) they tried to extubate her again, again she vomited,

this time there was a fear that she aspirated some of the vomit. They

performed a tracheotomy and placed her back on the ventilator, sometime

between Sunday and Monday they also inserted a chest tube.

On Monday, we received the report that she was only responsive to painful

stimuli

Tuesday we were told, she was not responding to stimuli at all and they were

doing an EEG to determine her brain activity.

Today we got the results back of the EEG as you know.

Pete, what is the official position of what went wrong? We see so many

people go through surgery here so often, we become rather blase about it,

but I know anytime the brainstem is involved, we're talking risk. Marie
